Newbie here - coming to Cambodia soon.
Put me straight please - do traders, shops, bars etc expect to see wads of Riel, or do they prefer Dollars? In what currency are things usually priced?
thanks in advance.
Dollars or Riel - which preferable?

There is no reason to change dollars into riel. You can pay with everything in dollars. You will receive riel back as change instead of American coins.
Follow my lame Twitter feed: @gavin_mac
Spend US Dollars, your change will be given in Dollars with Riel for the smaller denominations.
Only paper currency is used, there are no Riel coins, and unlike some south American countries Dollar coins etc are not used.

Use both, anyone who says otherwise is a tourist or a fool.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

Unless you venture to Bassac Lane where bitcoin is the currency of choice...Lucky Lucan wrote:Use both, anyone who says otherwise is a tourist or a fool.
Dollars for petrol, phone credit and in supermarkets. Riel for beer, local market goods and small store shopping.
You can save yourself a few dollars by this trick, every little helps.
For example, if I go to the local shop and buy $5 phone credit in riel, he wants anything from 500-1000 on top of the 20,000. Buy 10 beers in dollar, is 20,000. Pay $5 and get no change. Same in places like Lucky that have a much higher than normal exchange rate (4200 not that long ago). Yeah, it's only 5c on the $, but why give it to them if you don't have to?

Massive stalker
If you have USD$ bring it with you,
If you are coming from another country only change a small amount to USD and bring the balance of your cash with you and change it on the street.
Street vendors give 3% to 5% better exchange rate than banks do.

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

You start with US$ as a first timer and over time gather a growing number of riel notes.
Having small denomination riel notes helps in some situations when $1 is too much (tipping, giving money to beggars - 500 or 1000 r, or for the monks alm rounds in the morning (1000 r per monk). I do these things when I can, I understand others don't.
Make sure you don't disrespect the notes in public, as the king's portrait is on it.
