Baby vaccinations
Baby vaccinations
Royal Rattanak Hospital are looking for USD $500 for new born baby vaccinations package. That's a lot of Anchors worth. Has anyone any experience elsewhere? I understand from an earlier thread that these are often included in the hospital package price, at Rattanak it definitely isn't.

$500 is ridiculous. There's a clinic on the corner of Monivong and 182 (that's the turn off for O'Russei Market) that does a lot of vaccinations, so their stock is fresh and well-monitored. Otherwise try Pasteur Institute next to Calmette, it's a French run international organization and as good as you'll get.

I thought the khmers all went to the dr beat hospital near wat phnom. My missus and her sister went there with the kids at 3am one morning to get to the front of the queue.

Dr Beat's is probably a good choice, but fuck waiting around with the giant throng of destitutes outside the place, that's just depressing. The bong thoms are such cheapskates they send their kids there too, but barangs are far from welcome there. Anyway, Rattanak are taking the piss with their $500 BS, those shots cost no more than a few dollars a piece, polio vaccine for example costs less than a dollar.

Yep, the Mrs had mentioned a freebie from the good doctor alright. Sounds far too grim. Will get on the phone to Pasteur as advised above tomorrow, there must be a better way than Rattanak.

Just after my kid was born, the (extortionate) private clinic he was born in sent a "nurse" down to my hose to give a vaccination. It was $30 or something. No huge loss, but when I figured out you could get the same shot for next to nothing at that clinic on the corner of Monivong and 182 I told the missus to go there instead next time. Busy clinics have a big turn-over in vaccines and are more likely to have fresh ones than clinics with just a handful of patients. This is important, most vaccines have short shelf-lives and need to be kept at very particular temperatures.

Pasteur came good for us on this, thanks. Excellent facility, $11 per visit (presumably Khmer price). The baby will need to go there six times in the first eighteen months so overall $66 charge.

I completely disagree. I've never been made to feel unwelcome there. Thay hate visitors and anybody more than the childs mother being there 99% of the time though - I guess because of how busy the place gets.Lucky Lucan wrote:

Fair enough, I guess they are busy as hell and don't need anyone superfluous wandering about. I went to visit a relation's kid with the missus there once and brought loads of treats for him, but the guards just point blank refused to let me in the door. It was a sort of blessing in a way because instead of spending the evening in a poxy hospital ward I got to fuck off and have a few beers instead.

My overall charge of $66 above from Pasteur is complete shite, sorry. The second visit yesterday set us back $69, most of the cost coming from some new 5 in 1 vaccine called Pentaxim. No doubt there are a hundred cheaper ways of doing this and they saw the Barang's baby and rubbed their hands in glee. This has to be administered three times so overall Pasteur will likely approach the price of Rattanak if not exceed it. Growl...Bosco wrote:Pasteur came good for us on this, thanks. There was a thread on this way back, are you the invisible man? I got treated very badly there. I appreciate their work, but really, a little less messing with the overgrown violin and a bit of time on human relations skills would not go astray. The place was very quiet, few other visitors.Jackal wrote:I completely disagree. I've never been made to feel unwelcome there. ירי ילדים והפצצת אזרחים דורש אומץ, כמו גם הטרדה מינית של עובדי ההוראה.
These prices are just about the same as I am paying through my son's doctor (paediatrician). I trust her. Her advice and treatment has been spot on so far.Bosco wrote:My overall charge of $66 above from Pasteur is complete shite, sorry. I understand that the main reason is that the staff have an unofficial policy of shaking down patients. Either you take a ticket and join the queue for 10 hours, or you tip the staff and jump the queue. They know damn well that barang are likely to kick up a fuss about it whereas Khmers know the score and cough up without complaining. This is quite normal by the way; they do the same at Kirirom Hospital next door from what I've heard.Lucky Lucan wrote:

I'm really only giving out about the money being more than I expected. Maybe it is a fair deal. Pasteur are organised and partially managed by the French (a good thing). Their premises is state of the art and spotless.
