is it all khmers that scratch them themselves to the point of looking like the got in a brawl? or only the more traditional?
tried to convince my gf of the wonders of western medicine but apparently khmers are immune.....

What are you talking about? Coining? It's not particularly Khmer, it's used all over SE Asia and beyond.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Vietnam too. Only my wife (the only one in her family educated in a "Western" country) believes me when I tell her it's a stupid and dangerous practice. Coins are so dirty and exposing the skin underneath to that....just plain stupid. Then again, I know of some grandmas and traditional Japanese people that do it too but with much cleaner instruments like plastic spoons, haha.
You use the lid, not a coin. It is diagnostic for certain kinds of
skin infections. The idea is you "read" the results of the application,
and where you see the characteristic marks........then you work there.
But more than tiger balm will be needed.

If I am not mistaken, the purpose of coining and the cups is to bring the bad blood to the surface. Sounds legit.
