Who will sniff out expatriate death now that Ken resides in Australia's largest unfenced asylum? He was like a truffle pig!

Gotta agree there, for elective surgery in SEAsia, I'd be wanting at least BKK private or HK / Singapore.gavinmac wrote:You might want to ask the surgeon how many of his 299/300 complication free gall bladder surgeries were performed in Cambodia.
Cambodia is not a country where I would have elective invasive surgery.

I once asked a manufacturer of some medical device where in SEA they would have it - inquiring as a potential patient.
i specifically asked for Thailand, also Cambodia, even if unlikely from the start.
in an e-mail exchange i insisted on Thailand, even saying it was my only chance for budget reasons, and thought they really might have it at least in bumrungrad.
the manufacturer didn't even reply one time referring to Thailand.
they only repeated themselves, saying go to Singapore in each email.
and in general... the only doctors in the world I would still trust are Israeli.

My first port of call is Central Hospital . The French trained Gyno there was very competent when dealing with my ex. Cant remember the bill but it was not much. The ultrasound scan was $10. Another poster's wife had a c section at that hospital and he also new friends that have had appendectomies there with no problems. We discussed this a while back http://www.khmer440.com/chat_forum/view ... al#p573831

having HIV isn't necessarily a death sentence anymore.
depends on genetics, and may have some restrictions in life.
but then better not stay for treatment/blood tests in SE-asia, I would think.
whats the name of the $28-pill-anti-viral?

This is why I moved back to Thailand and remain here. Mind you what I had to deal with was not an emergency but nevertheless a condition that urgently needed to be dealt with by experienced professionals over a 6-month period. My diagnosis and tests at multiple Thai hospitals (part of my assessment strategy) and the resultant treatment at my final hospital choice appear to have been successful. One or two more quarterly blood tests should wrap things up. I have nothing but good things to say about my countless hours at Bangkok Hospital Medical Centre in BKK. Well, except to say: Go over your bills, remember what you paid before for the same procedures and ask for adjustments and discounts on the spot.splinter wrote:====clip====
Told my driver to take me to the pharmacist. Got some pain killers. Took them and booked a flight the next day to Singapore. Turns out I had deep bruising (that still hurts) but nothing serious.
Don't believe the hype. There is still not a single medical facility or doctor up to international standards here. If you are hurt, don't play around. Immediately head to another country.
BKK Hospital Pattaya seems to have had the same bad billing rep, although apparently that's been improved greatly by a new admin the last couple of years. It mostly gets decent reviews.

Sure that was his appendix, or was it just so he could get close to a certain hot nurse?

Given a choice I wouldn't go to a Cambodian hospital if I didn't have to, but when I've had to I've had pretty good luck. Took my kid to Royal Angkor in SR for stitches and the Thai doc did a proper job for around $100. Good bedside manner too. Spent several days in Royal Rattanak with pneumonia and again the Thai doc did the right thing and cured me, though there was one major procedural error. It was spendy but insurance paid for it. Had a major eye problem correctly diagnosed here and they dutifully referred me to Bangkok for emergency surgery. My ex had emergency major abdominal surgery in Aurora Clinic back in 1997, (no time to evac), and they did a good, albeit rather primitive job of it. Insurance paid for that one too. Problem came after the surgery, trying to get them to administer the appropriate pain killer. They don't like to use major pain killers here, especially opiates. In fact, the most dangerous aspect of the emergency back in 97 was an Australian nurse making an initial misdiagnosis, and prescribing some useless antibiotics. It wasn't until Dr Scott had a look, and determined in about 2 minutes that the problem was life threatening and required immediate attention.
