In my circle of friends in Cambo, there are 2 people who I know have had malaria but quite a few who have had Dengue - including one guy who has had it 3 times. Apparently there are only 4 types and if you get it once you are then immune to that type - this poor bugger is on for the full house.
Not necessarily. A friend and I caught 3 strains in one go in Koh Tao in 95 as proved by Institut Pasteur in Paris, been living here non stop since early 00's and either I never caught the 4th (nor the newly discovered 5th) or I did but they were so very mild bouts compare to our "near death" first encounter that I couldn't make the difference with a seasonal flu.
I've never had it myself - but it sounds like a completely miserable existence for a couple of weeks.
