Seeking gyms for lifetrs (dyel?)
Seeking gyms for lifetrs (dyel?)
Looking into living in Cambodia and want to locate near a gym with squat racks, Olympic barbells, benches, etc.
The usual "gym" with rows of cardio is not my thing.
I did a search but didn't see much. I've searched the net too but figure there are old school gyms without a web presence.

There are many scattered throughout the city. They are usually small, hot, stinky, and frequented by males of different genders who like to ogle. They have no internet presence, other than a possible Facebook page written in Khmer. Don't choose where to live based solely upon proximity to a gym, imo. Live near where you work, or streets 51, 104, 130, 136, 172, etc., if you're "retired". When you get here, just walk around your neighborhood, and ask everyone who can speak English. That's how Cambodia works. Easy!
Some of the real lifters here might reply with specifics.

I am sooooo very sorry if you can't understand or appreciate my sarcastic facetiousness.

Any advice for the OP?

I use a small local gym 100m from my house. I also use SuperFit and The Place on occasion.
There are zero Olympic quality weights about, all seem to use that fucking thin bar. All weights in kilos.
The machines at smaller gyms are death traps, SuperFit and The Place service their equipment.

Do your own. I put mine in the livingroom (it's just me and three cats, never have company); works great. I checked out a couple of local gyms in my neighborhood (Chamkarmorn), and went home and took a shower. Man, I wouldn't go back without a spray tank of Clorox strapped to my back. There are a number of sports shops on Monivong Blvd that sell anything you might need, at about 3 different price/quality levels. I have a nice setup, getting a trap barbell and some chain this week from them. I'll have maybe 6 -7 hundred US invested. When it's time to workout, I just get up from the chair and do it. Never miss a day this way, and sometimes I get in 2 sessions in a day. I'm a bodybuilder, though, not a power lifter, so really heavy stuff probably wouldn't work.

And I agree, gyms here are filthy Petrie dishes.

DIY. Doesn't look pretty, but it gets the job done! Since that picture I've added a chin up bar, and also some more hooks on the front at chest level for an easy overhead press setup.
Also as it's my squat rack I'm allowed to just slide a bench in there without anyone getting upset, WHILE in my underpants, WHILE wearing no shoes, WHILE listening to drum and bass at unreasonable levels (and possibly drinking a beer).
Home gym has a few drawbacks, no spotter for one. Also no one else watching makes it much easier to convince yourself that you're squatting deeper than you are.

Get a condo / apartment that has a gym. The one at my place is pretty simple, but sufficient for my needs. It's clean and usually i'm the only one there. The OP probably needs more gear than this though!chkwoot wrote:You're a lifter, aren't you?Mèo Đen wrote:If you're a retired bogun I think you mean!chkwoot wrote: Live near where you work, or streets 51, 104, 130, 136, 172, etc., if you're "retired".

You could get yourself a mirror mate. That’d help with the deep squats.

That is the identical weight set I bought at one time and sold off. Good enough for all the basic big lifts except heavy squats, unless maybe front squats.

starkmonster Looks REALLY good! I'm with you - I just finished working out - underwear, shoeless, big fan. Plus I go to the fridge after each set and drink tea, tomato juice, water. Big help. AND a bathroom a few feet away, always empty. No beer, but a bowl loaded and waiting for after the shower, which is a matter of a few steps, strip off the underwear, and suds up!
