What exactly is a carnet de residence?

A lot of expats increasingly settle in Cambodia with families and kids, or acquire them while here. This forum is a place to ask questions and discuss all things family.

What exactly is a carnet de residence?

I'm in a new CdR, along with wife and Jr's name.... but what exactly is it for? A residency permit, for Khmer?

Official name is "residence book" (seav phov snak nov) but it is more commonly and simply known as "family book" (seav phoc krousar).

It's just a residence registration leaflet, used for official and administrative purposes.

What do they look like?

Old ones are yellow, cardboard paper made.

New ones look like plastified proper booklet.

Old Residence book (that is considered like family book)

Strange, mine is new and looks like the family book, but has carnet du residence printed on the front, I'll get a pic tomorrow.

Family Book and Carnet de residence are two seperate documents, they both contain pretty much identical information though, and either document is acceptable when required (ie. Applying for passport, etc...).

Does it look good to provincial hillbillies when I finally end up getting suckered for a work permit?

Yeah, but he doesn't answer the question WTF is it... Yeah, it's a document, no shit, I know it serves an official thingymejig, but what is it's purpose?

Forgot to take photo, will try to remember tomorrow. And does it count for something if a long nose's name is on it, in the eyes of the law?

Pedro's, I can't be assed typing so for more information look up the following...

- Sub-Decree No. 73 on The Residence Book "Carnet De Residence"
- Sub-Decree No. 74 on The Family Record Book

Googled it but could not find any downloadable link. Could you please point me to some. Thanks a lot.

I think it is as simple as:

1. This is proof of where I live & who I live with
2. This is proof of my family

As PSD said, used for a variety of evidences needed for various things such as getting married, having sprogs, opening bank accounts, etc. Even in the UK you get asked for 'evidence of address' such as a utility bill, etc - I'd suggest you use the CdR for that. When you're registering births, marrying, divorcing, etc I guess the family book is more relevant.

 that's pretty much the gist of it, thanks Spigzy. I intended to get back to this post but forgot all about it to be honest.
