Birth Certificate for my baby
Birth Certificate for my baby
Hello, I am a Canadian living here and my husband and I have recently had a baby in Phnom Pehn. We receive some papers from the hospital we delivered in however, those papers are not a birth certificate. We are wondering how to register our baby, if that is necessary or not....and how to make a birth certificate. We are yet to claim any citizenship or make a passport (which we will eventually do with the canadian embassy). We are first wanting to know how to register him in Cambodia. And how to make a birth certificate. Is it necessary to make it also with the Canadian Embassy or what is the process. Please help us with this, if you know what to do or where we can go to for answers. We are completely lost when it comes to this. Thanks!

Start with your embassy, they should also be able to advise on registration with the Khmer authorities.

You need to go to the local sangkat office/village chief to get a birth cert. Bring the papers from the hospital and passports/ID card/ family book etc. It's cheap if done withing the required time. You won't be able to do anything about Canadian naturalization etc ill you have a birth-cert and it will probably need notarization.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Once you have the birth certificate you need to get it translated into English. From the Canadian embassy they say you need to provide:
- Child's original certificate of birth, with English or French translation
- Any custody/adoption document issued to the child (if applicable)
- Your Canadian birth certificate or a certificate of Canadian citizenship (if you were born outside Canada)
- Both parents’ identification documents (passport or other document which bears name and signature)
- Certificate of marriage if applicable (in French or English)
- 2 photos for the passport application (please note the photo specifications)
- Proof of travel for your child
Then you need to fill in a pile of forms and send the package to the Canadian embassy in Bangkok by courier (e.g. DHL). Once they've verified the originals they will send it back for pickup at the Australian embassy.
The Canadian Citizenship for the baby will then take 7-10 months as it goes back to Canada for processing.
Note that you can also apply for a passport for the child at the same time as the citizenship if you are planning to travel soon after.
For the forms and instructions, either email the embassy in Bangkok or PM me and I can send you what they sent me.

Documents they needed in my Sangkat:
- birth document from hospital
- copy of my passport (european)
- copy of mothers id card (cambodian)
- copy of family book
- copy on marriage certificate (european)
- western baby name translated in khmer
Birth certificate ready in one week, 10$.
They have some "light or heavy" version. We take heavy version with more paperwork. I didn't ask the difference between these.

^ Marriage certificate only if applicable, not married no problem.

Hi, is they any any issue if couple not married and have no family book?
Are either of the parents Cambodian? If so, they should have either a Family Book or Carnet de residence, and if this is the first child then a new family book and/or Carnet de residence can be issued as they are a new family.Sophia wrote:Hi, is they any any issue if couple not married and have no family book?
Not married, not an issue (according to the law on Family), but I have heard of commune chiefs refusing to issue birth certificates to non-married couples. If they try to say cannot, get a copy of the prakas and point out to them the relevant paragraph...or just pay the extra tea money.
