Kids in Cambodia
Something that has often played on my mind living in Cambodia as a Barang, we are never really accepted, regardless of how long we have lived here... I know that many of the poster on here have kids with Khmer wives, girlfriends etc.
My question is...where do you think your half Barang/Khmer kids fit into this deeply traditional society?

Don't mention the Giant Panda in the room.

But I tell it like it is. "What happens when the money runs out" is the real question you want to ask.

For me in the KOW, i've always thought of kids as - horrific smelly nappies, screaming, lack of sleep, attention seeking, ''you wanna buy bwacelet'' , glue sniffing, oh and the Khmer Rouge.
Do these feelings change once you have the little fockers?
My mum & dad did tell me i was an accident though. (probably a result of too much Double Diamond bitter)

SD totally agree with you!
However my wife is Australian also and so is my daughter...we live way out of the Barang green zone and are very accepted"as a Barang family" which I accept without issue. In course we are treated very differently in our community, but I cannot help but notice that we are a protected species...is it the same for mixed families is my question.

Violence and make-believe, 20 years of TV depiction including some horrific truths.
To a few who believe their shit doesn’t smell inspiration was found.
More and more of this generation are experiencing first hand, tourists, world news and travel.. and how many of those gave any evidence to disprove the prejudices already formed.
In daily life mixed raced children experience much prejudice, both good and bad, it is not helpful, empathy and reflection can be gained but only in later life, to a small child it is a misguiding emotion.
If and or when War comes to Asia, things become far more blunt and terrible things happen, differences become deeply pronounced.
Will it really take a cataclysmic event forcing together refugees from every nation and every walk of life, for acceptance and acceptance in peoples differences.
We are already living that event.. we are stuck on this rock together.. with limited resources and (currently) a finite future, if only it were realised.
A bridge spans two places, if either or both of those places are obliterated the bridge stands out as out of place.(rubble in the river)
Possibly the only thing that currently transcends difference is usefulness, or to be more precise the recognition of that usefulness.
The communities of Cambodia a quite tight-knit, If a drunken, impolite, whore mungering wanker has children, those children are probably going to be referred to as the kids of that......

...Always in my humble opinion...
I love all people, I just don't like them near me.

I guess it all depends on how deep you, being a parent, fit in.Marvin wrote:Something that has often played on my mind living in Cambodia as a Barang, we are never really accepted, regardless of how long we have lived here... From your comment I understand you consider yourself an outsider, so will you barang kid be then I guess.
I don't care where they fit. Just make sure you have them under control when I'm eating in a restaurant.
Or I'll shoot them in the face.
That's hyperbole, Pirate Pete.

Why do you need to fit in or integrate? I have found that it's better staying true to who you are then wasting so much energy trying to fit in and conform with others expectations. You don't owe anyone anything here or anywhere else.
If you require the comfortable feeling of belonging you are better off moving to where you grew up, home country etc.

I think in terms of integration/acceptance it's layered in a similar way to what you'd get in any other culture...the more genetic spread the greater the integration...because of cambodia's relative disadvantage the genetic spread is usually seen as value adding...often first expressed in anticipation of a new look mixed baby..Marvin wrote:Something that has often played on my mind living in Cambodia as a Barang, we are never really accepted, regardless of how long we have lived here...
