An alternate method of obtaining a Khmer wedding license
why, like really WHY are men still falling for the marriage scam!
Does the wedding certificate have to originate from your home country, or could one get married in Thailand, for example, and then present this in Cambodia?

This was NOT my experience today. Went and saw the legendary Mr Ung Vantha at MoFA. He listened, looked at my papers and said "Cannot here, but go and see Ms. Leak at Department of Identification" (part of Ministry of Interior). So I went to General Department of Identification ((opposite the entrance to Borey Peng Huoth Star Platinum (Chbar Ampov)) block D, first floor, furthest door from the stairs) and spoke with Ms. Leak. She said go see Mr. Theara in the office next door. Together they explained that a foreign marriage certificate only lets you off the age limit and $2500 per month income requirement; still need all the other bollocks.LoneStar wrote: I was about to throw my hands up when a friend of my wife's who works in the Foreign Afffairs Ministry told her that we could bring in our U.S. wedding license and they could give us a Cambodian license. It sounded too good to be true. But, we took our license to Foreign Affairs. They stamped it, and told us to take it to our local Sangkat. They warned us that the local Sangkat might not be familiar with how to process this. We took our stamped paperwork to the local Sangkat, they signed off....and I think the local police may have signed off too....and yesterday we picked up our Khmer wedding license. Total cost was 30.00 that we gave to the local Sangkat as a tip for their help.
Not only were we able to get the license for only 30.00.....but there was no medical exam, tax records, police report, etc....required. And, the license was granted after my 50th birthday. My friend in his 60's is now going through the same process.....but it seems that there is no age restriction if you do it this way.
So the being-married-to-a-Khmer route to an EB extension for those of us without a job and too young (<55) for an ER extension is just as difficult as ever.

What's 'all the other bollocks'?walkjivefly wrote:Together they explained that a foreign marriage certificate only lets you off the age limit and $2500 per month income requirement; still need all the other bollocks.

Items 2-7 on the MoFA "Documents requirements for Foreigner Applicant who wish to mary in Cambodia" list, ie:
2. Diplomatic note or letter of the Embassy/Consulate of the applicant
3. Single Certificate/death certificate/divorce verdict as appropriate
4. Criminal record check
5. Certificate of employment (or other evidence of savings/income)
6. Medical certificates for both parties
7. Copy of passport and visa (legalised by your Embassy)
I couldn't be bothered to ask for clarification on any of them, nor ask how much they thought it would cost, since the easy "show us your existing marriage certificate and grease our palms with $30" was off the table. Oh, and they said to expect it to take months.
