You, my man, are not informed. That is the most awful advise I have seen given in 9 years.v12 wrote:Some suggestions:kiwikhmer23 wrote:Please help with any advice on building a better relationship with my in-laws in a very complicated situation. I am not Cambodian also. Thank you
- Pay for the khmer private school for the kids in Cambodia, something like Beltei, has a good reputation among Khmers (and I also consider the school giving suitable value for money). Costs around USD 1400 per kid, per year for Khmer and English tuition as well as uniform, goodies, books and school trips. Take care, the parent(s) do pay for daily school money and arrange the transportation ......
- Pay reasonable medical expenses for the Grandparents, keep an eye on the bills.
- Pay reasonable medical expenses for the kids, monitor the bills.
- When visiting, buy kids cloths at Aeon(2!), bring quality hygiene items, like soap, from a Western country.
- Pay for Internet in the house, some USD 120 a year.
- Bring a low-end second hand laptop (including instructions how to treat it well, to avoid it being demolished within a few months). From USD 150.00.
- If the family does not have so, purchase a big (though simple) bed+mattress.
- Buy a cheap second hand motobike for daily transportation. Think about USD 400.00.
- When relevant purchase the family a washing machine. Think about USD 250 for a low end one.
- Buy a decent gas stove (verses the dangerous small bottle ones). Think about USD 80 including big gas bottle.
These things will seriously enhance your status as well that they "listen" to you.
Good luck.

I agree....bloody terrible advice, especially considering all parties involved are actually living in NZ, NOT Cambodiabatshitcrazyweirdo wrote:You, my man, are not informed. I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
Sure, in stead of complaining, just give better advise. There aren't that many options to "improve" the relationship with a distant family.PSD_Kiwi wrote: I agree....bloody terrible advice, especially considering all parties involved are actually living in NZ, NOT Cambodia

Thanks for the replies, any advice is much appreciated. Was so ready to give up tbh however she has asked for help with something this week so have shown up and done my big for my brother in law. I am hopeful to gain some ground with her but who knows. I am willing to try but at the same time I am a decent person so don't want to spend forever trying to prove my worth to people that don't want to see it regardless.
