Is it really going to be as boring as other posters suggest ?

ירי ילדים והפצצת אזרחים דורש אומץ, כמו גם הטרדה מינית של עובדי ההוראה.

Well, I have no idea who you spoke to. Had some folks coming over from BKK to escape the water throwing and I agreed to meet them at the KK / Hat Lek border and have a night or two in KK before moving on.andyinasia wrote:Can you believe it? Everywhere's booked up.
Had to do a U-turn - it's Koh Tral after all. Will save the KK tips for next time - possibly May
There are rooms at the Bay Hotel (next to Cafe Laurent), Asean (although there are some price hikes there and the story was a bit involved). Even the casino resort has some rooms. Further afield, Rainbow Lodge, TaTai Resort & Marina, 4-Rivers and TaTai Riverfront all have rooms. In fact 4-Rivers are offering a discount, but they are still way more expensive that the other Ta Tai places, one of which I will probably book today.
Final point - Cafe Laurent was good years ago. Now you wait over an hour to get egg fried rice.

I didn't actually speak to anyone; I just went to Agoda and other agents' sites, and I set a limit of $50 per night. Next time for Koh Kong!

I think that you will find that during holidays, resorts and hotels restrict the number of rooms they offer to Agoda and other online travel agents, as they pay bigger commissions to them and want to fill the rooms directly or through local travel agents.andyinasia wrote:I didn't actually speak to anyone; I just went to Agoda and other agents' sites, and I set a limit of $50 per night. Also $50/night does kinda restrict the options if you want quality over a holiday period.

So did you go and had to come back because EVERYTHING was booked, or did you just check Agoda and not much was available? I don't think that site is much help for places in Cambodia/SEA. Sure, it helps at times, but tons of nice places aren't listed. If you wanted a nice resort, then it would have been best to just call them up to book. Seems like you shot yourself in the foot to be honest.

Nothing as dramatic as that. Our first choice was Phu Quoc and second KK. When I thought we only had 3 days I figured PQ wasn't a good idea so spent about 3 hour surfing KK and seeing if anyone on K440 had a stand-out tip. Next day the missus said she'd negotiated 4 days so I plumped for PQ. Had that not been an option I would've put more effort into KK. Might get a few days off in May and check out KK then. All is good.
Nb. We just use a bedroom for sleeping, so we don't feel inclined to spend a load on luxury we don't really use. $30 odd gets that.

Khmer New Year in Phnom Penh is quiet and enjoyable. I prefer to go away on days not public holidays as one of the reasons I get out of PP is to get away from all of the crowds.

So do I but unfortunately every non-public holiday day is taken up with this damned thing called 'work'

The best place for a family might be the Oasis Resort. It's a couple of kliks out of the main town but has a huge pool with a kiddies area. It is a very quiet setting with about 6 bungalows. They have a policy of no taxi girls and cater to the family market. Tours can be arranged to keep the kids busy. The place is owned and operated by a lad named Jason. This place would be at the top of your price range but is definitely worth it.

Cheers, it's a thought. As a couple, we're not too keen on noisy kids, but it's better than noisy drugged-up thieving sex tourists!peterpuck wrote:The best place for a family might be the Oasis Resort.
