How to go from PP to Vang Vieng?
I want to travel by land -- VIP bus if possible, but boat also doable, or elephant.
Start from PP to Vang Vieng, Lao.
Has anyone done it?
Can you recommend a reasonably straightforward and stress-free way?

PP > Pakse on the bus. Probably $20-30. Pakse > Vientiane on the bus. Probably $10-20. Vientiane > LP on the bus. Probably $10-20. This bus stops at an old airstrip about 3 hours out of Vientiane - this is Vang Vieng - and the ticket isn't any cheaper than going all the way to LP.

I have driven it
its a LONG way and southern laos (except for the 4,000 islands) is boring
go up to Siem Rep an cross into Thailand at Osmach, bus to Nong Khai than cross over to Vientiane and bus to VV
Hope ur not looking for party town, as that has been closed down for a few years now
OR fly to Bangkok- fly to Udon- bus to the border and bus up

Take a shitload of Valium of get one of those hallucinogenic pizzas into you. That bus ride was horrendous - all I had to calm myself was beer but no bloody toilet!
Lao buses are by far the nastiest in indochina. They're also the slowest and stop the most frequently.
Make sure you break that trip up somehow.
Maybe PP -> 4000 islands.
4000 islands -> Pakse (drink the arabica coffee in Pakse, it's the best in the world).
Pakse -> Vientiane possible but still a hike.
Vientiane -> Vang Vieng.

... And what Richard said is what I've heard too - the party scene is not what it was in 2009.

i went in 2010, 2012 and it was full on all night with drunks, stoned under 25 year olds everywhere
in 2013 it was paradise.
all bars, shops closed at 10 pm, no loud music
they stopped the bars on the river serving pails of alcohol
Its a beautiful area an they are smart and wanting to go upscale for the Chinese tourist

Isaan highways aren't much more interesting than Lao highways, the buses are even the same as the ones that go Pakse-Vientiane. The only difference is the average age of foreigners on Isaan buses is double that on Lao buses.Phuket2006 wrote:I have driven it

you can leave Surin in the morning and be in Vientiane by dinner time

It looks like the best way to go is get into LOS on a short visa maybe 15 days.
Go to Udon or the nearest town. Go to Vientiane then bus to V. V.
My experience with Cambo buses has never been good regardless of the many faults of Thai buses (At least when a Thai bus breaks down, as it always does, they put you on a bus of the same grade.)
P. S. I heard as recently as 5 months ago that there was still some party action in V.V.

I was there in very early 2013 ( VV, that is) and even then the after-stench of the newly shut-down backpacker paradise could be felt( think the season before it ran full on party). The little town was pretty cool and I remember the overall experience, sans crazy tubing river, to be full on party mode. I liked mountain biking about 15 km or so out to this blue lagoon place that isn't hidden by any means.
Anyone who doesn't like Capitalism is a pathetic loser. God bless the USA and no place else.

No buses run across the border at O'smach. You'd either have to go over the border at Poipet and get a bus north to Khorat or take a Camry filled with 10 other people up to O'smach.Phuket2006 wrote:but thai bus's go much fasterpenisjokeforaname wrote:Isaan highways aren't much more interesting than Lao highways, the buses are even the same as the ones that go Pakse-Vientiane. From PP it's easier to take the daily bus to Pakse and then a night bus to Vientiane.
