Here's another one Here's the list of the world's worst tourist, according to the LivingSocial's survey:1. U.S.-20 percent 2. China-15 percent 3. France- 14 percent 4. Japan- 12 percent 5. Russia- 11 percent 6. Korea- 9 percent 7. India- 9 percent 8. Germany- 8 percent 9. Spain- 7 percent 10. Britain- 5 percent Are we really the stereotype of the "ugly American" when we travel? According to a new survey carried out by LivingSocial and Mandala Research we seem to be. And worse, it was predominately Americans ranking their fellow countrymen. Released Friday, the survey polled 5,600 respondents from five countries-- 4,000 of whom were Americans, says USA Today. Other respondents were in Australia, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom. The survey also revealed that four in 10 U.S. survey-takers said they'd stolen something – mostly towels (28%) and bathrobes (8%). Other popular items taken included pillows, remote controls, Bibles and sheets. So we're not just rude when we travel, we're thieves. The most common vacation disasters, according to American respondents, were: lost luggage on an airline (21%); bad weather (21%); and getting lost (16%). Americans weren't the only ones to rank our own citizens as the worst tourists. Australians and Canadians also gave the U.S. number one spot. Surprisingly, Americans do travel abroad, which may be contrary to the stereotype of non-passport-holding Yanks. According to the press release from SocialLiving, 78 percent of Americans have visited at least one foreign country, 61 percent have visited multiple countries, and 36 percent have traveled to four or more foreign destinations. http://www.foxnews.com/travel/2012/03/0 ... ew-survey/

Hardly surprising that the Amis voted for the French....

although many consider a trip to the World Showcase Lagoon at the Epcot center in Florida to be more than enough..

Most Americans think that Texas is a foreign country, Military service overseas doesn't really count, crossing the border with Mexico did not require a passport until recently and in many places it is just like Southern California anyhow. Take out travel to Texas, adjoining Mexico and Canada and overseas Military service and I think those figures would be 1/4 of what they are.
Note to self: Must be nice to morons.

that's a good one, "and in many places it is just like Southern California anyhow" except southern ca very seldom has gun shoot outs on the streets or bodies dug up in mass graves. I think most American travel still to Mexico and the Caribbean and only a small % leave the northern hemisphere.

except that Mexico very seldom has postal workers massacering their co workers or disgrubntled students gunning down their classmates .. and as for mass graves, that is just because serial killers spread them around; so on balance even your exception ends up being pretty much same same. I do agree to your commnet that few venture further than a 4 hour flight from the mainland USA.

Thailand 31st 'least rude'? In which universe can that ever be correct - Thai's are more intolerable & rude than just about any nation I've had the displeasure of visiting (i.e. behind Vietnam and a couple of others) This report is therefore total & utter bollocks and should be treated as such, I rest the case for the prosecution. (I'm not French!)

Because the free-spending tourists and people on large expense accounts that do these studies only encounter the 40 flavours of the famous Thai smile and have no idea what lies behind them. I'll tell you the most genuinely polite and decent people on the planet - the Nepalese (mind you I lived there at a time the tourism was all but dead).

My co-worker, my boss, and myself all looked into how much a trip to Cambodia would cost (from Detroit). More than $2,000 for a ticket, and that was a bargain, for just the flight to Cambodia. Yeah, so bite me, geographically connected Europeans!

Just brought a ticket Phnom Penh to sfo and it was $1350 for August, but then sfo to PP was only $1,075
Just checked on Kayak and its the cost of getting to SF that drives the price up, best price was around $2,000. Problem with Detroit is u need to get to the west coast first for the good deals
