Arriving without a return ticket (Filipino citizen)
Arriving without a return ticket (Filipino citizen)
Hi all, I'll be arriving at the P.P. airport next week with my Filipino girlfriend with intent to stay a few months. Because air tickets are obviously cheaper for one-way, and we plan to extend our first arrival, I was thinking about buying one-way ticket and arriving with just that, but I'm wondering, what is the risk that I and/or she will be turned away at immigration for not possessing a ticket to leave?
If most of you think I/we will be turned away, is there a way to buy a bus ticket departing Cambodia online, cheaper than an air ticket out of the country, since we won't be using it?
Thanks in advance.

The chance of Cambodian immigration turning you away is zero.
The chance of your airline not allowing you on the plane, out of concern that Cambodian immigration might turn you away, is much higher.

Too true. A Filipino colleague of mine (who is married to a Khmer) wanted her mother to come over and stay (long-term) recently. Her mother had an E-class (ordinary/business) visa already, but couldn't get on the flight from Manila because she hadn't got a work permit.gavinmac wrote:JiggyMan wrote:Hi all, I'll be arriving at the P.P. airport next week with my Filipino girlfriend with intent to stay a few months. I've heard that the Philippines is very strict about letting young Filipinas leave the country. The women have to get some kind of approved exit clearance, etc., out of concern for human trafficking. There's something called a CFO sticker or CFO certificate they may need to get. I don't know. My point is that if she has no return ticket, they may assume she is emigrating and not let her on the plane without the emigration paperwork.

Spot on!
Without a return ticket she will find it difficult leaving the Philippines.

Thanks for the replies everyone, and particularly the mentions of getting her out of the Philippines, but she is already out and with me in Thailand. We are moving to Phnom Penh together.
When we first entered Thailand for example, she was asked for proof of departure, but I was not.
I'm concerned that might be the same at Cambodia immigration.

I was under the impression Air Asia doesn't have any full refundable tickets, just fully flexible tickets, which is less advantageous.MaybeMove2PP wrote:Just buy a full price fully refundable ticket then cancel it. Zero loss.
Then again, what are the chances of getting screwed on the refund? If Air Asia, bought online, maybe it's not refundable or it would have be refunded/cancelled in the country I bought it (Thailand).
Does anyone know if it's possible to buy a bus ticket online in advance, from, say Phnom Penh to Bangkok?
Thanks.
Sheesh about time that ASEAN set up their own "Schengen" zone..

Who says you can only buy a ticket from AirAsia???? You're thinking way too hard about this. Buy one way tickets here from whatever airline you want. Then buy a one way for her, fully refundable, to wherever you want from whatever airline you choose. At this point its all a farce you're putting on anyways so get her a first class ticket to Doha with Qatar Airlines. You're just going to cancel it with full refund the next day.JiggyMan wrote: I was under the impression Air Asia doesn't have any full refundable tickets........

Leaving Thailand won't be a problem because neither of you are Thai and entering Cambodia won't be a problem because you both have a pulse. Conclusion: One way ticket is fine.
I would not count on that. I suggest doing as others have suggested--buy her a fully refundable ticket departing less than 30 days after arrival on a full service airline that does not screw people over on refunds. For maximum plausibility, I'd either make it a ticket returning to Thailand or the Philippines. Then cancel it after you arrive here.
If you are too short on money to afford that, or have other issues with the idea, then go to a travel agent around Khao San Road in Bangkok and ask about a return bus ticket. I detest that area, but it is the best place in Thailand I know to buy international bus tickets.

We came in 2nd week of Oct. The advice to buy a dummy/refundable ticket was the best advice. Thai Airways actually wouldn't let us purchase a one-way ticket departing/originating in Cambodia at a ticket office location withing, so I tried to do it online. Turns out Thai lets you create a reservation online without ticketing (paying for) it, holding for 72 hours. So I did that and printed out the itinerary of this "hold reservation" which of course we never ticketed. We used this printout to demonstrate her return ticket when we checked in with Air Asia, so it's good we didn't go with the one way. Thanks for the advice maybemove2pp/gavinmac/Buscador.
