Any Info On Pakse?
I am going to be in Pakse, Laos for a few weeks soon and was wondering if anyone had any information on the city with regards to crime levels, traffic, or any other helpful bits of info. It would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Haven't been there for about 3 years, but can't imagine it has got any more interesting.

Lovely town but very sleepy. Break up the terrible bus ride ex-Cambodia by stopping at Dondet. Drink the local aribica coffee, it's the best I've ever had. Eat duck larb. Don't get caught holding Laotian Kip by the end if the trip, it's toilet paper currency and difficult to rid yourself of.Masada wrote:I am going to be in Pakse, Laos for a few weeks soon and was wondering if anyone had any information on the city with regards to crime levels, traffic, or any other helpful bits of info. Thanks, I am looking for a sleepy type of town to get some writing done. Is the town fine in terms price and safety in your opinion?

Generally is slightly more expensive than Cambodia. If youre a HST style gonzo, bring bottles from Cambodia. Hard liquor is more expensive in Laos. If you're worried about crime, id hazard that chicken rustling is your biggest concern. Be prepared to serve yourself in bars and pool side locales as the locals will inevitably be asleep.Masada wrote:Thanks, I am looking for a sleepy type of town to get some writing done. I appreciate the info, thanks. Seems like a pretty relaxed place, should be interesting. Luckily I am a Beer kinda guy so I will likely stick to sipping on BeerLao, I am intrigued about having to serve myself lol.

I had to self serve, poolside at a 4 star hotel, which I think was the best dig in town! Extrapolate backwards from there and you get an idea of the vibe of the place.Masada wrote:I appreciate the info, thanks. Seems like a pretty relaxed place, should be interesting. It is indeed very quiet. Except for the groups of lonely planet carrying, soap-dodging backpackers that are always passing through town.
I couldn't imagining spending a couple of weeks there. A day or three in Pakse is more than enough for me. You should consider moving around a little if you're staying several weeks. Options close by include Champasak, Paksong, Attapeu and the Islands down south..
I would go crazy if I were to stay several weeks in Pakse.
Laos is quite safe IMO. Even at night. But some people on here think a night out in Poipet means you are guaranteed to get killed or stabbed in the face, so I guess it's a matter of opinion. In my experience, Poipet is a fairly safe place.. both at day and night.
The food in Laos is usually pretty good. As is the coffee. Beer is widely available. Most people seem to prefer beer Lao but I usually go for the big bottles of Namkhong beer. If staying in a place with no fridge.. I just buy a couple of kilos of ice, put it in the sink and shove a bunch of bottles in there. That usually lasts me a couple of hours until the next beer run.

large groups feral children with ill intent do exist in Pakse but rarely encountered. only once in say 5 week at a time visits did they try any nonsense. only place i have encountered these in SEA. STAY WELL AWAY FROM THEM IF YOU DO SEE THEM IN YOUR PATH. other than that zero issues. price wise in the center you get that nonsense vietnam pricing but out of the center in the region where the bridge comes in from thailand there as similar to thai priced accomodation
Thanks for the advice guys. I have a part time job offer on the table in Pakse, the wage is garbage only about $500 a month but it's for about 1 hour a day 4 days a week so it's still alright money in consideration of the hours worked. Figure I'll spend a few weeks in Pakse before I decide on the job, I arrive in SEA in about a month and thus far have no real plans...Trying to decide where to go to settle down for 5-6 months has proven trickier then expected...Trying to finish a damn book which is impossible it seems back in the West, I blame the wife but she blames the booze lol.

That's what I figured, will still check out the city but will likely find my way back in PP or the like.

? Having been there several times I can't say I encountered much Viet pricing (unless you choose to stay at one of the more upmarket guesthouses) or feral children.puss in boots wrote:large groups feral children with ill intent do exist in Pakse but rarely encountered. only once in say 5 week at a time visits did they try any nonsense. only place i have encountered these in SEA. The town itself feels very Thai provincial with pretty fixed rates on bikes, vans and buses like Thailand rather than the Viet scam buses. The problem is there simply isn't much to do but laze around on the riverside and the food isn't so great. You can honestly get the same experience from Kampong Cham (which has better food) if you aren't planning on using Pakse as a stopping point to get from A to B. The attraction would be its proximity to Thailand, but there is relatively little difference between what can be bought in Isaan and Pakse now.
It is definitely better than the nondescript highway towns closer to Vientiane and slightly more busy than Savannakhet, but the expat scene would be next to nonexistent.
