I would like to take the bus to Kampot and then see Bokor Mountain the next day. Are there many decent hotels within walking distance of the bus station when I arrive?
Also are there tours to the mountain or will I have to rent a car and driver? I do not want to use a motorcycle.
Thanks very much!
Kampot and Bokor Mountain
Yes and yes. Hotels and tour operators everywhere. It's a very small town.JJones wrote:I would like to take the bus to Kampot and then see Bokor Mountain the next day. Are there many decent hotels within walking distance of the bus station when I arrive?

was i Kampot 2 days ago, tons, ( way to many ) gh and resorts on the river
Tours ( around $10/person) but its a ways, 20 minutes outside town ( towards Kep) than 32 kms road to the top, u can experience an empty casino and hotel there and hopefully great views ( been raining here past few days)
why not use a motorcycle? roads are NOT busy

Never rode a motorbike in my life. Too old to learn now... But thank you both for the info!

When you are in Kampot, visit the Zoo, get some food for them frail, skinny animals locked up inside the cage to boost your morale before hitting the treeless bokor mountain.
EVERYONE BOW DOWN TO HIS MAJESTIES phat kunthea™
While I agree that the animals need feeding, anyone paying to visit the zoo is only encouraging the owner to keep it open and prolonging the suffering of those poor animals. That place needs to be shut down, the animals rescued, and the owner to spend some time in a zoo himself (Cambodian prison).phat kunthea wrote:When you are in Kampot, visit the Zoo, get some food for them frail, skinny animals locked up inside the cage to boost your morale before hitting the treeless bokor mountain.
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

I totally agree, that place is a disgrace. I've never been there, but I've seen so many shitty reports about it for years, and I hear it isn't much different now. The guy who owns it complains that he can't afford to feed the animals, but I don't think that means he doesn't have enough money himself. What he possibly means is that the meager fees raised from tickets can't quite stretch to paying for a whole lot of food.
Anyway, to the OP, Bokor is a lovely place. When the sky clears there is an amazing view. Standing by the cliff with the crazy noise from the jungle below and clouds shooting up vertically can be good too.

About the zoo...
I recall reading about some wildlife/conservation NGO that was trying to work in partnership with the owner to improve conditions within the zoo. And that the relationship had broken down irrevocably.
The zoo is sited in one of several large durian plantations that belong to the owner of the zoo. He's in no way a poor man. It's risible he can claim to be an animal lover. It's a dreadful place. The enclosures ensure the human visitor can see the contained beast at all times, no seclusion.
Visitors are *encouraged* to feed the animals...with any old junk that the visitor sees fit to offer. Primates drinking coke or Red Bull ?!?! Visitors squirt water and throw laterite granules at the animals to get their attention. And goad them.
And say things like, "Oooeee, that elephant is really skinny. Not enough to eat. I feel sorry for him"
Also, the foreigner entrance fee is something like 12 or 16 times the rate for Khmers. 'Because barang have money a lot - but Khmer people very pooooor'. Like the zoo owner.

I used to rent from Kampot car rental (KCR) but not sure if that operation is still on. I didn't have a driving licence for Cambodia but no problem. Does have it's risks of course. Was under $40 per day

Thanks for all the suggestions. I just got back. I wish they had left that casino as it was for historical value. It appears there is relatively fresh plaster on some of the walls. I read the reason somewhere. All that development on the mountain is very unfortunate. What a beautiful location if left alone. In a few years they will likely build a water slide or some stupid thing.
Did not go to the zoo. Sounds like a China zoo.

I assume you mean the hotel. The casino is a separate much less interesting building now used as a workers' dormitory or somethingJJones wrote:Thanks for all the suggestions. I just got back.
