Will she be on one AirAsia ticket, or separate tickets?
If she's on one Air Asia ticket, with bags checked through, with ample time, and with both boarding passes issued in Phnom Penh, it would be a bit hard to screw up the connection. Presumably she can get on the first plane in Cambodia. Then it's just a matter of, upon landing, showing boarding pass to airport agents in KUL and asking where to go. She won't have to change terminals, at most it would be a change from KLIA2 Q gates to L gates, right?
The potential fuck up is when Air Asia massively delays/cancels either flight and she has to spend the night in Kuala Lumpur. What are the obligations of the chaperone then?

Hahaha, actually I did fly on the BOAC VC10.logos wrote:Vlad, what's the name of the last airline you flew with ? BOAC ?
Last airline was Qatar Air, for my sins. Before that, Air Asia, Thai Air, Emirates, and before that Singapore Air.
Hate flying with a passion.

If she has little or no command of English, there's a lot more that can go wrong, and if that's the case and I were Scoffer I would not take the risk and send her off with someone to accompany her as well.gavinmac wrote:Will she be on one AirAsia ticket, or separate tickets?

At PNH she probably can manage, but starting from boarding she will feel very uncomfortable, she probably doesn't know how the seating system works, how the system used with snacks / drinks sales works, wouldn't understand messages during the flight (no toilet use now, fasten seat-belts, stay seated, etc etc.).
Upon arrival in KUL everything can go wrong, she needs to go to 'connecting flights' instead of 'exit', she has to go through the hassle of hand-luggage checks again, then she has to find the correct gate, notice gate changes & delays etc, board the correct plane and find the correct seat, and after another few hours of feeling uncomfortable she has to find the right track in Melbourne to the exit. But then the real challenge comes, she will be questioned upon arrival and will probably be refused if she's not able to talk to the border police @ MEL. If she's allowed to enter she has to find the right belt for luggage, and after that she has to go through the correct channel (green / red) - big change she will be picked out over there because she'll look like an insecure person.
No, loads can go wrong....
and furthermore if she cannot read the roman letter could be even worse at the KL or Melbourne airportKachang wrote:If she has little or no command of English, there's a lot more that can go wrong, and if that's the case and I were Scoffer I would not take the risk and send her off with someone to accompany her as well.gavinmac wrote:Will she be on one AirAsia ticket, or separate tickets?

The seating system is the same as on a bus. Also, the stewardesses will help. She can be told in advance that Air Asia doesn't give free meals or he can splurge for the $7 and buy her a meal in advance.Kachang wrote:

I thought this lady had been to Australia before. If so, he should have taught her everything at the airports the first time around. When I travel with a Cambodian woman I make her lead the way through the airport, find the check in desk, find the gate, find the baggage belt, etc. (Note: she still always goes in the wrong direction).

The cabin attendants just pass her on to ground staff and they in turn take over. Generally they go to the desk and she would then wait there, near the staff, who will basically (and perhaps literally) hold her hand through everything.Kachang wrote:Upon arrival in KUL everything can go wrong, she needs to go to 'connecting flights' instead of 'exit', she has to go through the hassle of hand-luggage checks again, then she has to find the correct gate, notice gate changes & delays etc, board the correct plane and find the correct seat
It's part of their job.

scoffer just needs to contact the respective airlines prior to the trip. She will be fine.

Yeah, imagine the Immigration cops pulling you in, and asking how you know this exotic chick who can't even speak Stralian. You could just tell them it's cool, you have no idea who the fuck she is but your mate Scoffer off the internet paid you to take her over. Just tell them you do it all the time, it's no fucking bother mate.Gin&Tonic wrote:Note to any prospective chaperone. You may be investigated for human trafficking offences.

Don't forget it's Air Asia we are talking about. I wouldn't be surprised if they charge for the extra service. They charged us for escort service and use of a wheel chair when my wife was about to go into labour on arrival at Bangkok.vladimir wrote:The old, the sick, the very young and nervous or clueless first-time travellers are often assisted in this way.

The border police don't know he or she's the chaperone, if he or she hands over her passport together with his / hers and explains why they're there, they probably will be through in a minute. If she's on her own she will have to explain why she's there by herself. Maybe she can't?gavinmac wrote:

And about teaching how to fly, my wife has flown intercontinental with stops in between with me about five return flights, still she was reluctant to fly the PNH-DMK stretch together with our daughter without me being there. I can imagine Cambodians being reluctant to fly to Melbourne by themselves.

Why would they hand over their passports together? And if they do that, and then the guy says "I just met her and was paid to deliver her to another guy" that's so much worse than her arriving alone.Kachang wrote:

back in the days, a smuggling route for working ladies was Bangkok- Australia- Japan, cause girls coming from Australia with a companion were not suspicious as those flying direct
Pay was $1,500, ur ticket and the girl for a night

This particular girl has been to Aus once before, accompanied by an Australian friend of Scoffer. She has some basic understanding of English.
So some aspects will be ok, like boarding, meals, how to use aeroplane toilets, etc.
Her main worries are getting lost inside the terminals, filling out arrival forms and having hassles going through immigration.
The terminals will be ok I think, with help from hosties and ground crew. Stressful but probably ok.
Immigration could be tricky.
I took my gf plus a female friend of hers to Singapore last year.
The immigration people at Singapore airport questioned the friend at length about her travel motivations (she was meeting her own barang bf in Singapore).
Eventually they let her through. They looked through her photos on her phone to confirm she had a bf in Singapore plus to get an idea of her life back in Phnom Penh. Very thorough.
My gf has come with me to Aus twice. Each time the transit immigration at KL have asked her a few questions. The Aus end has been fine.
Each time we've travelled I've got her to navigate us during transit, reading the tv screens and gate numbers. But it is hard for some of them. I think it would take a few trips like this before they were confident about travelling alone.
One of my female staff had to transit in Bangkok a couple of years ago. She was deliberately told wrong directions by Thai ground staff because they knew she was Cambodian. She only just made her connecting flight when a barang intervened after finding her in tears wondering along the terminal corridors.
