Looks like we unexpectedly have some time off, so I'm planning to head out on a little road trip to Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri, and then stop by Kratie on my way back. I'm thinking of driving to Sen Monourom, spend two nights there, then drive up to Ban Lung for two nights, and then drive back via Kratie.
Any thoughts/advice for the trip? I know that the Mondulkiri Elephant Project is on the top of the list in my guide books, but I'm thinking of checking out Bunong Elephant Project as that comes highly recommended. No thoughts at all about specifics in Ban Lung.
I figured that we'll like to visit a coffee farm or two, explore some waterfalls, buy some avocados if they're in season (I don't think so, but I don't know), wander around, and do whatever else.
Would appreciate any thoughts overall. Thanks!

Banlung s a nice town and roads are good all the way
Waterfalls are nice and easy to drive to,even in my honda civic.
very good affordable hotels,I stayed at the Ratanak Royal hotel near the circle and night food market. Think it was only $15

In Ratanakiri try Bang Yeak Loam, take a swim and walk around the lake. it's about a 45' to 1 hour walk around the big O and it's a pleasant walk.
There's some waterfalls in the area, but the ones in Mondulkiri are better, although a bit further of. In Ratanakiri 'Kachagn waterfall' is about 6 km out of town and can easily be reached by car, tuk tuk or motorbike. Bang Kam Saing in the center of town is a nice area for a late afternoon stroll and a drink. At night, try to find some bush meat if you're into that. It can still be had. Ta Chea pub / bar does excellent bush meat dishes, especially their 'Sach Chluk cha k'dao' is worth a try.

Cool guys (and Joon), thanks for the fast responses - keep em coming!
I'll probably get into Sen Monourom towards the evening, so I'll have the next full day to explore, and then maybe it makes sense to take advantage of the following morning and the waterfalls of Mondulkiri before rushing off towards Ban Lung.

we walked around that lake, took longer than it looks< should have jumped in:-)
Nice little museum there as well.
IF you have time, drive up to Steung treng than head up to the Mekong ( about a 75 minute drive 30kms on dirt roads) and see the 4,000 islands from the Cambodian side, casino and good restaurant right at the Khong Phapheng falls
you can also go over to laos for the day, no visa needed, (although not much to see but a small village) just pay the boat man

In Sen Monorom the Chili on the Rocks Bar run by a friendly Swedish couple is the best place to relax and have a drink. Good schnitzel with gravy too.
Phanyro Guesthouse good value for $8 a night
Mondulkiri Project a good option for seeing elephants
In Ban Lung The Balcony Guesthouse and restuarant a good place for meals and drinks.
Still some avocadoes about. Try a soursop if you haven't before.
