Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

Immigration officers are getting damned surly these days, speaking of ridiculing comments. First of all, many of them give you a disgusted look on arrival. And, no, I'm not a haggard-looking, dirty alcoholic foreigner.
Into Siem Reap last year, the c*nt stamped me in 3-4 blank pages into my diminishing passport, and upside down and in the middle of the page. I walked away and went back to ask if this was OK. Gave me a dismissive gesture and a grunt. On the way out, I gave a female officer a shoulder shrug when she saw where the stamp was. She looked over somewhere to other officer desks and then stamped me out.
Another time later, the officer threw the passport and almost off the counter top.
On the way in a couple of weeks ago, I handed the officer my passport and realized I'd forgotten to write in the visa number. I told him I could write it in for you. "Who's immigration? Are you immigration?" I said, "You are, sir". "You can stand over there," pointing to the lineup. It was a strange exchange. He did his job but what a miserable bunch overall.
I thought the Viets were grouchy. Have to say they've been better lately at SGN Airport.
Yeah, it's not easy to get a hello or good morning out of them in English or Khmer.
I've given up being friendly and just scowl back at them. They seem to appreciate this.
Dear ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ - sorry for being off topic here, but I am studying how to read khmer and just read your name. Awesome!
If I could chime in on the scam subject, I got an evisa before coming into PP. no issues on the entry and it was pretty quick. However on the way out, I practiced khmer with the immigration official and asked him how he was. He replied that he was "not good because he had no money."
Me not being the swiftest ship in the fleet, felt bad and told him in khmer "I hope you feel better tomorrow." He laughed.
Later, at the gate it hit me what he was doing. The info above from others is terrific.
Thank you board.

all the fingerprint machines ive used at all the immigration (Phnom Penh + Siem Reap Airports, Poi Pet + Koh Kong + Bavet Land Borders) the machines have all been simple to use with 4 diagrams indicating (lights up) what fingers and in what order, i think even a monkey could complete such a simple taskDahon wrote:GM - I've got size 12 hands, so, no don't think that.gavinmac wrote:What were the ridiculing comments? Playboy - I'm Swedish, not American. And there is no part of Sweden called Florida. And I guess in Florida they hand out cartoons on the flight showing the procedure, usually the Americans are great at explaining things to even the dumbest of visitors.
Ok, I walk up to the counter, immigration officer spews out something like "fimpin", I e fingerprint. I hesitate and then try to put my fingers on the scanner, which features a bottom area 4cm or so which is covered by semi-translucent green plastic. The upper 4 inches or so just have this yellow-green glass. Now, is it obvious where to put your finger or that You are supposed to put all four finger but not the thumb on the UPPER art? Officer sees my hesitation, reclines hiss body and in particular his head, stiffens his upper lip, and in his best Queen's English spits out "-foofingaah, foffingaah" (four fingers), meaning that he wants me to put my four FINGERS (thumb obviously not counted as a finger) on the scanner. I then put my fingers and thumb on the bottom part since I find it diffucult to understand why You mark off a certain part of the scanner if You donn't intend to use it. Why then not mark it with black tape, red crosshatch or some other internationally recognized symbol for "NO".
This, to put it mildly, does not impress said immigration officer. He tells me rudely to put only the fingers and not the thumb on the top part before reclining back into is headmaster style position of amusement. Anyway, I eventually succeed in passing all four levels of consciense (ringt fingers, right thumb, left fingers, left thumd) and get my passport stamped.
Now, this is not like being interrogated in Abu Ghraib, but why not put up a sign if I m the 2000th fuckface that week to do the same mistake. And if I was the first idiot to emerge at the counter, why not show consideration?
It probably goes natural to all You old Cambodia hands out there but I found it an unsettling first experience. Anyway, everything elso so far has been smooth.

One should think so but the number of times I have been stuck behind some Chinese or Korean tour group and they really were just too stupid to use the machine. Obviously, this not improve the mood of the immigration officials, neither party speaks English, so arrival is reduced to screaming, slapping of counters and generally just a rather lousy welcome/departure to/from Cambodia..Jamie_Lambo wrote:all the fingerprint machines ive used at all the immigration (Phnom Penh + Siem Reap Airports, Poi Pet + Koh Kong + Bavet Land Borders) the machines have all been simple to use with 4 diagrams indicating (lights up) what fingers and in what order, i think even a monkey could complete such a simple task
P.S.: I am obviously talking about those Chinese or Korean tour groups dad did not make prior arrangements, in the process waltzing past the entire immigration process without as much as showing a passport. Yes, I hate them!

This is where You are totally wrong. I have traveled a lot and have lived in Japan and China. But never had to leave fingerprints until Japan introduced it in 2012. But usually where I've traveled, a EU passport had been the only visa You need and no biometrics needed. Ok, I'll admit that nowadays EU passports contain one fingerprint and a 3D facial image so I had to leave a print last time i got a passport. Even China does't scan though I've heard rumours that they will start soon. Ok, I'll give it to the authorities that they haven't started DNA sampling yet. I guess the EU and the USA are racing to be the first.Lucky Lucan wrote:Obviously Dahon is not exactly well-traveled.Alex wrote:Bit surprising, really, I've found their fingerprinting procedure rather intuitive. Saw this scam again today. French guy pays for visa, gets change, walks off. French guy comes back a bit later to say “hey you short changed me” and the guy promptly gives him the rest of his change without argument. Chubby guy, wearing white Apple air pods or whatever they are called in his ears.

Oh man, that is just such a MASSIVE SCAM, how outrageous. Did you read my post what just happened in PoiPet? The Thai side trying to set me up to be thrown in prison?gavinmac wrote:For the second time in about a year, the following recently occurred:
1. I land at Phnom Penh airport and fill out application for tourist visa, which costs $30.
2. Officers put tourist visa in passport, I hand over $50 and await change.
3. Officer puts $10 and $5 bill on counter and sort of waits to see if I'll leave. I stand there waiting for the rest.
4. Officer slowly puts $5 more on counter. I take it and leave.
II wonder how much they are making off this scam.
You don't know what a scam is buddy. Always let the officials have a little kitty cash, they got kids at home to buy bicycles you know. They don't waste the money, their family needs it. You make their family happier.

Calm down buddy! Gavin Mac doesn't get out much.
