Though you're not American I think you could benefit from reading this guide:

Taking one year old baby to Cambodia doesn't make a lot of sense. Can't you leave it with the in laws or something?[/quote]
Great guide GM! Short and to the point. If Cambodia is anything like what is described it'll be paradise. Chinese taxi drivers are usually comparable to motodop drivers in Cambodia. Aren't from the place, speak NO English, can't find anywhere, can't read a map, don't have a map or map app on the phone, meter is "broken" so forget about receipt and price is often "misunderstood". Cambodian taxis sound like a dream.
I've travelled a lot in Asia so the beginner's scams I've seen before. Also, our son is close to four years now and he's been to Japan 4 times, Thailand several times and he's done Pattaya incl the bar streets (in a stroller) quite a lot so he is already an experienced sex tourist. See no issues bringing him except we have to be careful about food. He loves eating at McDonalds but I guess these are not common in Cambodia.
Getting from PP airport to downtown hotel, and PP to SR

There are Burger Kings in Cambodia. He'll be fine.
Motodops do speak a bit of English, especially the ones who work in tourist-friendly areas. Though motodops are less common these days, there are more tuk tuks.
I recommend downloading the areas you'll be visiting onto google maps on your phone and then you can use that to direct the motodops.

OP: download the Exnet app discussed here. Even if you don't use their service, it will give you an idea of taxi prices. If I use a tuk-tuk or regular taxi, I always negotiate and pay less than what Exnet estimates. If you do use it, make sure the driver starts and stops the app on their phone, then only pay what the app says on your phone. They will try to scam you.

I don't think he'll be taking many motodops.gavinmac wrote:There are Burger Kings in Cambodia. He'll be fine.

And he should buy a SIM card (they may even give him a free one on the plane) and enjoy 1.5gb of data for $1.

It's still not as bad as taking your girlfriend's young daughter to visit Sharky Bar.logos wrote:If you ever decide to write a book about how to raise a western kid in SEA, I'll be happy to write the foreword.our son is close to four years now (...) and he's done Pattaya incl the bar streets (in a stroller) quite a lot so he is already an experienced sex tourist

Sharkey's is a hooker bar? It's not in your face. There usually are a few ladies who probably wouldn't be opposed to being asked out, but the times when scantily clad scires of Viet hookers would come sit on your lap or start rubbing your shoulders are definitely over, alas for some. The food still sucks, though.
I've taken Mrs Logos and local friends there on a couple of occasions, they enjoyed the place and the music.

Ok, I booked Giant Ibis PP to SR, at least I get to see some of the Cambodian country side. Anyone knows what the taxis should be from the bus station to a central hotel? Less than $12 I guess? Will fly back if the bus trip is too bad but they said about 6 hours.

Don't know about taxis in SR but if you are staying at a decent hotel they will probably do a free pickup. If not around $3-4 if there are a few of you, $2 if you are by yourself.
Careful with the fingerprint scanners on the tuktuk though.

Dahon,
Yes, you'll "see the countryside". But it's 6 hours on a bus of rice fields and spartan palm trees, of which you'll be on your phone/lap top 96% of the time. I'm sure you can afford it - order a taxi ($70 for a safe and fast SUV) like a civilized human. Pick-up and drop-off taken care of, buy a bottle of rum and then tell the taxi driver to stop for a coconut, pour rum into coconut, enjoy repetitive scenery from back seat with cocktail.

Normally, Giant Ibis will actually drop you off. The bus station is pretty central and a Tuk-tuk (no taxis available there) should cost you USD 2-3 max.Dahon wrote:Ok, I booked Giant Ibis PP to SR, at least I get to see some of the Cambodian country side. Disregard Miguelito, he has this big baller thing going on all the time. I'd rather sit in a big-assed bus than some crappy Toyota driven by someone that has no idea where he is going.

Yes, I always try to take the bus from BKK to Pattaya for the same reason, a SUV going up against a tour bus or 50 ton trailer will lose 100% of the times. And it feels so much safer knowing your feet are above the oncoming driver's head. So, $2-$3 or so, good to know where it should end. I guess they will start with $5 or more and then I have to haggle it from there.Hanno wrote:Normally, Giant Ibis will actually drop you off.
