Don Det. Laos.
Yep.
Bring your man bun, wife-beater and fisherman-pants.. but leave the soap at home. Then get ready to load up on banana pancakes while watching all the seasons of friends on repeat..
The Island itself is quite nice though. The problem is all the backpackers that have washed up on it's shores.

Alcohol is necessary so that a man can have a good opinion of himself, undisturbed by the facts

I'll be staying in Don Khon~ much more pleasant.
~just gonna hang out~swing in the hammock overlooking the 4000 Islands~ read a book or 3,smoke the excellent cheap weed,watch/listen to the fishing boats putter on the great Mekong, ride a bicycle to the waterfalls and relax.

I've been to Don Khon, it is indeed the nicer island.
Not sure how it has developed but the east side has/had the better views.
Let me know if that huge tree about 1/3 down the island on the east bank of the river still stands there, always thought that would make a brilliant location for a tree house.

None but ourselves can free our mind.
I was there yesterday and the tree is still there, looks great. I would also suggest staying on Don Khone (just over the old French bridge from Don Det). Although it has developed a bit in the 7 years since I was last there.

The production of too many useful things results in too many useless people.(Marx)
The tree is still standing. That Mighty Mekong has a 7 metre up from down. That Waterfall(s) are amazing.
The flow of water is unbelievable.A big clamp down on the weed a month ago. Paske forces shut down the main dealer Reggae Bar, fined 2,500$.. the wife panicked, threw 10kg's into the Mekong.

Any word on the smoke situation in Don Det after crackdown? Looking for a chill out spot before Cambodia.

Rated R for Ricecakes
should be ok for a few more years yet. havent seen any reports of MacDonalds, KFC, or pizza hut being placed front central, this is an absolute sure indications that you gotta look for some other place to holiday.

I was there in July , people puffing openly in the more isolated bars as well as gueathouses offering, plus mushrooms advertisements in many restaurants. I liked it there, had a bungolow overlooking the river with a hammock on the porch for 3 dollars a night, no mod cons but what else do you need other than beer n food. Stayed ten days.SBreaks wrote:Any word on the smoke situation in Don Det after crackdown? Looking for a chill out spot before Cambodia.
k440, something to do when you're pissed.
It's super natural relaxation~ take a book or 3. Everything closes 11pm. Dead quiet. Just the sound of the Mighty Mekong rushing to the Waterfalls. my 2 day stay extended to 8, I left when my 10buck bag of weed finished.horace wrote:I was there in July , people puffing openly in the more isolated bars as well as gueathouses offering, plus mushrooms advertisements in many restaurants.
