Looking for recommendations for nice resorts anywhere in the country (not just the beach), but especially:
Kampot/Kep
Shitsville/Islands
Siem Reap
The Kiri's
Koh Kong
If Western run/owned or managed, would be better.
I do think that Reef Resort and Taho can be left off the list, thanks.

Are these to visit yourself, and what do you mean by "resort"? The "best" would probably be Song Saa Private Island, but probably not what you're looking for. In SHV, the only "resort" that would fit the classic meaning of the word would be Sohka, for example.
For a 'friend'. By resort, I mean somewhere private enough, with good facilities, in a nice location. $$-$$$, not backpacker places.Miguelito wrote:Are these to visit yourself, and what do you mean by "resort"? A few quick thoughts:
Kampot:
Greenhouse is very relaxing place to stay, with pretty good food and kayaks, tubes, and paddle boards available for use. Only drawback is that it a decent ride out of town, if they'll want to be eating in town for dinner (although I would just pick up a beer for the tuk tuk ride back at night). A plus is no kids are allowed.
Les Manguirs is decent for families - closer to town, alright food, still on the river, and lots of board games to pass the time. However, lots of kids, so I wouldn't stay there if you don't have kids.
There is a brand new place that I quite like, Pipalli, about half a km south of town. Only six rooms, with a very nice pool, and a petanque pit. There kitchen also does very good seafood (try the crab amok!).
Kep:
Knai Bang Chat is the obvious suggestion, and even if you don't stay there, then I would recommend heading to the sailing club for a sunset drink.
For a full relaxing experience, book Villa Romonea - absolutely perfect. Great pool, view, and staff at your disposal - plus there are even tennis courts.
Next door is Le Ponton, the bar used to be great but I'm not sure if the place sold or not.
Shitsville/Islands:
Sohka is the only full fledged "resort", and is actually kind of nice with the long beach, bar on the beach, and pool (with a bar in the pool). Would be good with kids or without. Although the music at Christmas time almost drove me to suicide, as it was Christmas Carols on repeat sang by what sounded like a high pitched toddler.
Head to Otres II, and there are a few nice places, one of which is a little back off the beach on the river, but with a nice pool (forget the name).
On the islands it's hard to beat The One Resort on KRS, which is the only place (that I know of) with a pool. Good food, and very easy to kill a few days pool/beach side.
Siem Reap:
Too many options, all depends on what you want and how much you're willing to spend.
The Kiri's:
Kirirom Mountain lodge is a nice place, only 6 rooms, so you can rent out the whole place for a group if you want. Moroccan chef there. Not much to do (VKirirom has many more 'activities'), but you can relax or go for a hike.
Koh Kong:
In Tatai you have Tatai Resort, but if the budget allows head to 4 Rivers Floating bungalows. There are also some places down in the mangrove park, but more bungalow style. A resort, complete with a golf course, is the Dara Sakor Resort. On the island itself, I am not sure.

Cheers, a few things to go thanks to our resident baller....
BTW 'Kiris refers to Mondol/Ratanakiri, not Kirirom, I've got that place well covered already.

Oh yea, haha, I guess my mind was in the south. Well, I don't think you're going to find many "resorts" there!pedros wrote:

The nicest place in Ban Lung may be the Terres Rouge Lodge. Haven't stayed there (stopped by for a drink), but it's the same owners as the Rajabori in Kratie. The Rajabori was beautiful, but the exact opposite of Western management. Both places have very nice, traditional Khmer wooden buildings. But they do drop down in my book as they're selling fake Kampot pepper in their lobbies. I mean, seriously, would it be that difficult to just sell real Kampot pepper? I expect that from a market, but not a nice hotel with a foreign owner.

I stayed in Kep recently . A couple of nights at Knai Bang Chat and then 7 nights at Botanica. Absolutely a must do is sunset cocktails at The Lounge at the KBC Sailing Club.
I can thoroughly recommend Botanica Guesthouse . Best saltwater pool I have ever been in , immaculate $25 bungalows and fantastic food.

Rated R for Ricecakes
I was past a place called Cominsia Lodge outside Kep. I didn't stay there as it was way out of my budget, but it looked very nice. Run by a French guy. No kids allowed.Miguelito wrote:Kep:

Another time I stayed at Tropical Hill. Very nice rooms and close to the beach, a small pool with view over the nature park. But probably not a resort quality. And another time I stayed almost a month at a place called Birds of Paradise - run by a stand-up Aussie guy, but more of budget place.
