Overnight car parking at the Cambodian/Vietnam borders
Has anyone ever parked their car overnight at one of the border crossings to Vietnam, particularly Bavet (next to Moc Bai and closest to Saigon)? I assume it's possible to park at one of the numerous casinos next to the border, or perhaps work out an arrangement with immigration in their car park. How safe is it? How much does it cost per day? Note that my car does not have permission to cross into Vietnam, otherwise this question would be moot.

Thanks for confirming that. I figured it wouldn't be an issue and lots of people do it. Just haven't been across a Vietnam/Cambodia land border in a couple of years and this will be the first time I plan to drive to the border and park there.

FWIW also I have made arrangements to leave a car at multiple border crossings on the Cambodian side -- none of them border crossings with Vietnam, admittedly, although I don't see why it should be any different. I think the longest period was a week or more. I don't think it's worth leaving your car in the street or in a casino lot when the Cambodian immigration/customs police will happily accept a few bucks a day or something to park it in the police post. I tried to work out an arrangement with one of the casinos once and they were absolutely not cool with it, but I've never had a problem with the police.

Thanks for the tip. Strange that the casinos didn't want your money, but good to know, I'll head straight for the immigration police then!

Got back from Vietnam a few days ago. Parking at the border worked beautifully. You just drive inside the customs/immigration area (this was at Bavet) and you can park for free. My friend who came to the border to meet me even asked the guards to confirm their policy, they said no problem parking there, just they aren't responsible for any loss of valuables, which is understandable. I took a motorcycle with my belongings to the Vietnamese side where my friend had parked his car.
Quite a different attitude to what happened on the Vietnamese side of the border on my return to Cambodia. I was driving my friend's car (Vietnamese registered) from Saigon to the border at Moc Bai and as we approached the guard's hut at the beginning of the customs area, we asked for permission to drive a further 50-100m so we could offload my belongings near the entrance to the immigration area. I had the feeling that Vietnamese customs doesn't like locally registered vehicles (except buses, trucks and motorcycles) going past their guard hut without permission and indeed didn't see any Vietnamese cars there.
The guard was angry that I was driving, despite my friend explaining I had a Vietnamese driver's licence. He wanted my friend to drive to a parking lot, he simply did a u-turn and parked about 20m away on the opposite side of the road. After offloading my luggage and arranging for a motorcycle to take me back to my car on the Cambodian side, my friend was shooed away by the customs guy. A pretty strange and aggressive response to a simple question. Not the first time I've had bad experiences with Vietnamese customs - never a problem with immigration, different story with customs.
