Onward ticket / current visa

My experience as of yesterday. Coming from Mauritius the guy at checkin asked about an onward ticket and I told him it was unnecessary and there would be no problem of visa on arrival. (hoping he has NO idea of the current changes ongoing regarding extensions). This has only happened once before in 20 years so I was not worried.
After much humming and hawing he tells me he can't let me onboard. I am speechless and immediately start thinking how I am going to book something and how much will it cost me and can I refund it immediately afterward. After standing there flustered for a few moments I asked for my passport back, showed him my current visa which is still good but expires on Nov 2 and he says Oh no problem then, hands me back the passport, scribbles OK on my boarding pass and off I go.
I still don't understand why he would ask for an onward ticket with/without a current visa as one can be had on arrival or perhaps he didn't know that and was covering his ass by being extra cautious. The funny thing is he could probably justify deniability because I still had to go through 2 more countries to get here and the last would have been Malaysia. Air asia had no qualms about my onward status. Go figure.
Just a heads up that wherever you are coming from and no matter the airline you can't be sure what the person behind the counter will throw your way.

It's entirely up to the airline as they are responsible for bringing you back to where you came from on the next flight out if you are not granted a visa on arrival for some reason (which can happen).
I'll fly with Air Asia from Bangkok til Phnom Penh with an empty passport next week. No return ticket. Does anybody have experience with them after the visa changes?
I've been asked to show onward tickets previously when flying from Europe with different airlines, but in those cases I had either a valid visa, or many expired visa extensions to show them.
To be on the safe side, what's my best option for a refundable flight ticket?

It might be useful to some to know that an outward bus journey would be accepted by an airline as evidence that you would leave the country within 30 days.
Transit by taxi. Let somebody in the country sent you an email with "We arranged your taxi to boarder XYX".
And 2 weeks ago, I got the same mumbles from TG in BKK, on which I replied without hesitation: "VOA, I have an EU passport".
OK, was the answer.

Quick update: I traveled with Aeroflot from the Schengen area to Bangkok via Moscow, and with Air Asia from Bangkok to Phnom Penh. I was not asked to provide a return or onward ticket on either of the flights. I was also given an E-type visa without any questions at Pochentong with a new, empty passport.

You can sign a waiver form saying the airline is not responsible if you are denied entry.
Are you sure? Air Asia FD terms and conditions already states they are not responsible for denied entry.Cope wrote:You can sign a waiver form saying the airline is not responsible if you are denied entry.

I flew from Don Muang to Phnom Penh recently and the Air Asia check in staff were hassling some people checking in ahead of me. Not sure if they were flying to Cambodia, but there was an animated discussion about visa on arrival, onward ticket requirement, did they have proof of a bus ticket, etc. It was a major hold up to the entire tucking line, not sure if they ultimately had to buy onward tickets or not.
