I have some mates visiting that are planning to have a 16 hour layover in Guangzhou, "so they can say they've been to China".
Anything to see or do there? I know the food is good, and I've had some good long layovers in the past (such as Seoul), but Guangzhou doesn't strike me as a top choice to chill out in for a day.
Guangzhou layover
A cruise on pearl river at night. Plenty of modern trendy boutiques downtown and a large pedestrian area.
If they are flying with China Southern and have a 16 hour layover, they will provided with a free transit hotel. They will also qualify for a transit visa which is obtained on arrival.
The hotels are generally within 20 minutes drive of the airport, unless they are business class then they should be allocated the Pullman which is a short walk from the main departures and arrivals hall .
If they are flying with an airline which does not provide accommodation would suggest get an airport hotel or one close to the Metro line, which you can ride from the airport to the city centre.
Also, use ATM at airport if you don't have any CNY as not all dispense cash to foreign cards. You might want a VPN as well !
