Bangkok gets Michelin stars
A few months late, but I wanted to highlight that Bangkok had finally joined the ranks of major cities in the world with a Michelin guide and the accompanying stars.
17 restaurants in total earned stars, 3 with 2-stars and 14 with 1-star.
In addition, 35 restaurants were recognized with the Bib Gourmand. For more, check out the Front Page article here, and let us know if you've been to any of these places, or what they totally missed out on.

Duuude, read the article... there are actually some great deals on the list (such as a 1 star with a $15 lunch deal), plus the 35 Bib Gourmand restaurants listed, which was one of the main reasons for me to write it up and share.pedros wrote:Chances of ballers like miguelito going to these establishment: high-certain.

There is one more thing to really take note of, and that is another rating in the guide, separate from the stars: the Bib Gourmand. This little known ranking is what I always first google when visiting a new city where the guide is. It highlights “exceptionally good food at moderate prices”, with a capped pricing based on the local standards. For instances, in Paris you should be able to get a meal for less than 36 Euro, in Singapore for less than S$45, etc. In Bangkok they capped it at 1000 Baht, or about $30.
In essence, the Bib Gourmand is where the Michelin employees and raters are eating while they’re not on duty, where they return to again and again for excellent food at accessible prices, places to let the hair down and simply enjoy the food, atmosphere, and people around them. Although few things can top a truly exceptional meal at a Michelin starred restaurant, they will never become your go-to places like a spot on the Bib Gourmand can. I have not had the chance yet to work my way through the list though, but plan to start exploring in full on my upcoming trips to the City of Angels.
I Love this place in Bib Gourmand category greta value fantastic northern Thai with spiciness not dumbed down and maily Thai customers on my visits.

I have been to many of the restaurants. Problem with some of them is that you now have to wait for hours to get food. Jay Fay actually want to give their star back as they are completely swamped: https://www.eater.com/2018/1/9/16865246 ... ood-vendor

Taipei also had its first guide released earlier in march and Big Gormand category includes stalls at night markets

$15 for lunch? Are you out of your tiny mind? (I stick to my comment)

What is wrong with $15 for lunch? My average lunch is USD 20 - 25 and it is not from a starred restaurant.pedros wrote:$15 for lunch? Are you out of your tiny mind? (I stick to my comment)

Miguelito is a caricature of himself who is totally out of touch with his core audience. He has no idea that bars put chits in cups, but he's right on top of the ferry schedule to Sokha hotel, Michelin-starred Bangkok restaurants, and the correct tax on a Porsche Cayenne S in Cambodia.
Obviously, he prefers high brow discussion on Khmer440, yet simultaneously permits posters to make comments about Violet and Ann Snow being raped.

Far enough, I didn't know what a "drink chit" is. The concept of a bill in a cup is normal, but I didn't know the terminology, and I maintain that putting individual chits for each beer consumed is an archaic system.gavinmac wrote: Miguelito is a caricature of himself who is totally out of touch with his core audience. Yes, a public ferry that crosses to Chuoy Chvar. I know that's outside of your St 104 to 178, riverfront to st 51 radius, but other posters found the times useful.gavinmac wrote:he's right on top of the ferry schedule to Sokha hotel
Being aware of the taxes in Cambodia doesn't make me out of touch, it makes me informed.gavinmac wrote:and the correct tax on a Porsche Cayenne S in Cambodia.
I prefer all kinds of discussions on Khmer440, a little for everyone. Posters like Meo Den might appreciate these food posts, whereas posters like yourself prefer discussions with photos of shirtless men... not that there's anything wrong with that.gavinmac wrote:Obviously, he prefers high brow discussion on Khmer440, yet simultaneously permits posters to make comments about Violet and Ann Snow being raped.
Open Wine do a great lunch deal for $16, you can choose ONE entrée + ONE main course + ONE dessert, from a large selection of items. Check the choice here:http://www.open-wine.com/menu-open-wine ... unch-menu/Hanno wrote:What is wrong with $15 for lunch? For me this is one of the finest meals in the world. Thai style BBQ chicken is right up there with tandoori imo ;
Som tam, khao niao and kai yang
Thai style BBQ chicken (or pork belly), and papaya salad.

As cat boy knows, I do like those set Business Lunch deals around town, they are a great chance to have a much better than average lunch at much less than the restaurant would normally charge in the evening.
Open Wine has been a favourite for years, although they do not change their menu often enough for my liking, I prefer more variety more often - just like my women.
La Residence is one of the best restaurants in town, and they have two options for their set lunch menus, an $18 for three course one, or the gourmand set lunch at $33 for three.
Topaz also offer a set three course for about $18 as well, and is excellent as well, I just prefer the style of food at LR - a personal taste thing
Vann's Restaurant has apparently changed its menu recently and I am looking forwards to trying their new set lunch at some point soon and hoping that it is a more vibrant menu as the old one was, I felt, a little tired.
Those looking for a more cheap and cheerful, yet still full of flavour and quality lunch can still find many options around town, such as TasteBudz for South Indian cuisine. Which I find a much better lunch option than its North Indian cuisine options, which for me are better suited for dinner and beers.
On a Sunday, the full Roast Lunch at The Box Office is hard to beat at $8, especially given the great quality when compared to a lot of the alternative options around town - I believe that they are also now open for standard lunches the rest of the week now, and their Fish and Chips is a great choice for a lazy Friday lunch, especially if you are planning on having a few drinks that evening (nothing like a good lunch to line the stomach prior to an evenings overindulgence.)
Cat Boy mentions Sushi Bean over his bridge, over my bridge their are also several good quality and low priced options for lunch, but I think that I will keep them a secret for now. Except to say that some surprising little treasures can be found hidden away down some small back streets.
