China 72 hrs no visa policy
China 72 hrs no visa policy
I understand one can stay in one of the main Chinese cities for up to 72 hrs if one has a flight leaving the country within that time from the same city. Has anyone done that? Just wondering what the mechanics of it are. If I book in at the PP airport for Beijing they will ask for a Chinese visa. Is there some document the airline will give me ahead of time? Then at the Beijing airport what is the procedure? Thanks very much.

You need to be in transit from Country A to China and then flying directly to Country C. You can't have a domestic flight within China. You can't fly PP to Beijing to Cambodia.JJones wrote:I understand one can stay in one of the main Chinese cities for up to 72 hrs if one has a flight leaving the country within that time from the same city. The procedure is to check in for the flight and tell the airline staff you are transiting China without visa and watch them freak the fuck out for ten minutes as if they have never heard of anyone transiting China without visa before. Supervisors will be called, groups of staff members will huddle around the computer clucking and pointing at the screen, and then they will finally give you a boarding pass.
On arrival in Beijing, the procedure is to go to a special desk marked "Visa free transit" and hand your passport to the immigration officer. Then watch them freak the fuck out for ten minutes as if they have never heard of anyone transiting China without visa before. Supervisors will be called, groups of officers will huddle around the computer clucking and pointing at the screen, and then they will stamp you into China.

Recently, China announced a new 144-hour visa-free transit policy, which allows you to enjoy a longer stay (6 days) in China without a visa.
This visa currently only applies to passengers transiting through China via the following cities: Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Beijing, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, Dalian, and Shenyang.
The major difference from the 24-hour and 72-hour Transit Without Visa (TWOV) policies, is that you can travel within one of three whole regions.
https://www.chinahighlights.com/travelg ... a-free.htmYou must be in transit to a third country or region (Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan are included). For example, USA–Shanghai–Taiwan is acceptable for a 144-hour transit visa in Shanghai but an application for USA–Shanghai–USA is not.
You must use one of three types of transport: train, ferry, or airplane.
You must hold, before entry into China, an onward ticket departing Mainland China within 144 hours.
You enter and leave from one of the eligible ports of entry. Your arrival port and departure port can be different. For example, you can arrive in Shanghai and leave from Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province.
Your must have no stopovers of any kind within mainland China prior to arrival or after departure at the port of entry.
Your transit time is no more than 144 hours.
You must stay within the permitted area during your stay.
You must be a passport holder from one of the 53 countries listed above, and your passport must be valid for at least 3 months from the date of intended arrival.

You'll want to carry a hard copy print out of your onward flight reservation from China. A printout of your hotel confirmation in China wouldn't hurt either.JJones wrote:Thank you both. That helps me a lot.

Next time I fly through China, and have more than a few hours of layover, I'm going to do this just to watch the clucking clusterfucks!gavinmac wrote:You need to be in transit from Country A to China and then flying directly to Country C. I am sooooo very sorry if you can't understand or appreciate my sarcastic facetiousness.
Done it numerous times in Guangzhou, no problems or dramas, but don't know about Beijing and don't understand why it would be so strange a request.
They are geared up for it, used to have a special line, they now have a waiting area where your visa is processed then you proceed to immigration, took about 15 minutes all told.

China’s 72-hour visa-free rule allows “transit passengers” from 51 qualifying countries to visit the cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Shenyang, Dalian, Xi’an, Guilin, Kunming, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Xiamen, Harbin, Tianjin, Nanjing, Qingdao, and Changsha visa-free. But they must have pre-booked airline tickets to third countries or regions, with valid visas for any subsequent destination, departing from specified airports in China within 72 hours of their arrivals. (For purposes of this provision, Hong Kong is considered a “third country.”)
Is Guangzhou worth a visit in itself? I have to go to Hong Kong and for not much more I can go via Guangzhou and stay for 72 hours - just wondering if it’s worth it or not...
they dont want those despicable black africans roaming around china freely

Yes it is. Downtown is compact , nice pedestrian area and enjoy the restaurants along the yellow River and maybe a river cruise at night. Some interesting museums too.
