I just got back from Vietnam, and wanted to give a heads up to those Americans, Australians, or other nationalities that need a visa that getting it online was not as smooth as I had hoped.
It was easy to apply for and pay the $17 fee, and I received approval the next day. The problem is that then at HCMC airport, I needed to go to the visa window with a new application filled out, and pay an additional $25. The kicked was having to stand there and wait around for 30 minutes. And then, you still get a full page visa, with the stamps on the next page, so you don't even save a page in your passport.
Alternatively, I could have paid an agent in Phnom Penh $45, and it would have been hassle free and zero wait at the airport.
If you're flying in from Ohio where there is no Vietnamese consulate, then yes, do the visa online and deal with it at the airport. But if you live in Phnom Penh, I don't see the value in doing the online system.
Vietnam Visa - don't do online

Agreed, you were lucky if you only waited 30 minutes; I have seen massive queues there.

if you're in Cambodia, then yes. just go to the Vietnamese Embassy and get one while you wait. easy. same day.
no need for an agent.
no need for an agent.
Why, oh why, didn't I take the Blue pill?
They're fast and helpful. The normal, non urgent procedure takes 48 hours and costs $40 for a single entry.
If like me you arrive too late to pick it up (I arrived at 4:05 and they close at 4)...well the friendly guard outside the gate doubles up as a fixer and will get it for you for a small tip (I offered $5). There were a few people at 5:30 who like me picked up their passport out of hours. Small things like that still make Cambodia an easygoing place.
