I'm not sure about this. It sort of seems to be an article of faith in any KR discussion, but I don't recall anything in my reading of the history books that explicitly identifies glasses wearers as targets for the KR. Remember, the KR were fully aware that large segments of the population were "new" people. While they had a harsher existence because they weren't used to rural life and were less effective when working, I don't think they were randomly targeted for execution just by virtue of being new people. They were held to stricter standards, and when they broke the rules, they were far more likely to get severely punished. However, the idea of people being singled out for wearing glasses then carted off for execution as a result is something I have not remembered from the rather extensive list of books I've read about KR times.

Elizabeth Becker goes into the glasses thing in one of her books, and makes the same points as JC. One part was thast the KR did not make glasses, so once they broke you could not replace them.

I'm also going to back up the last two posts, I've never read any evidence that people who wore glasses were singled out. It's just one of those unsubstantiated claims that was written in the Reader's Digest in 1977 or something and since then it has been quoted so many times that many now believe it to be true.

Isn't it more likely that glasses cost money, ergo people with glasses have money = enemies?

You win, how can I argue, in the face of such an extensive refutation?

I brought up this topic last night when casually chatting with an acquaintance. He said people who wore glasses were also the target, his reason is that those who wore glasses were educated. Which makes sense to me.
