Anyone know of volunteer opportunities in northern Cambodia.
Anyone know of volunteer opportunities in northern Cambodia.
I am 22 with a bachelor's in history. I have lived in Asia for over a year and speak beginner to intermediate level Chinese, Vietnamese, and Lao. My skillset probably limits me to teaching English. My personal goal is to live among the locals and gain insight about their lives, culture and language.
Thanks for any help,
Harold

Well, what other skill can I bring to the table with a degree in history?

You are over-qualified for opening a bar in Sihanoukville.
But are you able to drink a litre of spirits day-in day-out for 6 months or until you have to sell your bar for 25% of what you bought it for do to health reasons?
Joking apart good luck with your quest and I hope your monicker doesn't indicate a proclivity towards a certain white substance starting with the same letter as this was the nickname used around my parts along with Herbert Green and Carlos Blanco.

Could have gone straight to law school.

Or sought an unpaid teaching position in Cambodia... I wonder which of these two excellent prospects he'll choose!gavinmac wrote:WonkoTheSane wrote:I'm pretty sure you know the answer to that...Harold wrote:Well, what other skill can I bring to the table with a degree in history?

Ya'll are a difficult bunch. Mr. Pol Pothead raises a fair point.
Why should I go into law when there is a good chance that the time and money I would have to invest in obtaining the degree might not pay off? Also I have heard the work hours are ridiculous and I am simply unwilling to sacrifice my health or youth for the Anglo-American legal system. Besides I am a simple man by Western standards and I am content so long as I can nourish my body and provide a roof over my head.
I was hoping for some type of experience which would allow me to exchange my time and knowledge of the English language for teacher training. Perhaps I was wishful in my thinking.

Well there are possibilities. However, you'll have to content yourself with working in Phnom Penh, there is pretty much nothing going on in that area in any of the provincial centers. When you come here and travel around a bit you'll get to understand why.Harold wrote: I was hoping for some type of experience which would allow me to exchange my time and knowledge of the English language for teacher training. Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

Absolutely right, the odds that teaching English in Cambodia for free will catapult you to unheard of reaches of riches far outweigh those of getting a law degree. You, sir, are on the right path to ensure a stable economic life and should in no way be concerned about being a destitute, cat food eating senior citizen praying for a painless death since you can't afford any actual healthcare.Harold wrote:...Why should I go into law when there is a good chance that the time and money I would have to invest in obtaining the degree might not pay off?
EDIT: Since you're young I'll go ahead and say that more clearly and gently. Go get your shit together and obtain a marketable degree or trade, then fuck about all you like in Asia.

Those who begin coercive elimination of dissent soon find themselves exterminating dissenters. Compulsory unification of opinion achieves only the unanimity of the graveyard.

It's soon to be the standard for TEFLers in Cambodia.OrangeDragon wrote:Period.Pol Pothead wrote:What kind of job did you envision getting when you chose that major?Harold wrote:a degree in history

At least it's not an Art History degree. Or Philosophy.

Many great men started their career lives in teaching. Mao Zedong and Ho Cho Minh were both teachers early on in their lives. As I recall, even Pol Pot taught in the countryside in the immediate years after his return from France. A liberal arts degree is what you make of it and my hope is that if I continue to dedicate my time to the study of languages that someday it will open up certain doors. My writing and communication skills are decent and I continue to work towards improving them. I also plan on studying business to see whether it is worth pursuing.
I probably sound narcissistic but I feel compelled to defend myself as the conversation thus far has largely focused on my ambitions for the near future and choice of degree.
