Thanks. I will do that.scobienz wrote:whiteboy wrote:I was doing some research on NGO work opportunities. Are most of these volunteer type jobs that are non profit or do a lot of them pay? I read that a lot are working for humanitarian causes like helping with infrastructure, rescuing children from prostitution and things like this? I also read that they are sometimes met with controversy from the locals and government at times. Would getting an NGO job be safe, pay a comfortable salary and be easy to get without a lot of previous experience in the field?scobienz wrote:Yes, of course there are opportunities here. Don't be mislead by the number of teachers on 440 . . while there are many teachers in Cambodia, there are also many many westerners doing other types of jobs: management positions, NGO workers, business owners, accountants, lawyers etc etc. You just have to get yourself here and search out the opportunities.
No idea, I'm sorry. I don't work for them myself. I suspect the answer to your question is yes and no and sometimes . . .
I believe Jacked Camry is big in the NGO world. You might try PM-ing him.

Zero chances if you are 'poor'.Bitches go for money first, ALWAYS.....white faces, six packs and big schlongs are secondary.Kachang wrote:Or come and marry a rich Cambodian girl. Loads of them in PP, and they love to have these lovely white babies.
Conspiracy theory...the new rock n' roll.
This wasn't the case for me in Japan and in China. The women I was meeting knew I wasn't making bank as an English teacher and would still sleep with me and often would be fine with being my girlfriends. I do agree that most rich women are superficial and only want rich partners, but that isn't always the case.

I'm guessing you don't know any rich local women then?Kachang wrote:Or come and marry a rich Cambodian girl. Loads of them in PP, and they love to have these lovely white babies.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
If I end up having to teach Engilsh, that will be alright. Does anyone know if there are private English centers in the big cities where I could teach one-to-one rather than big/small classes? I had no problem finding centers like this in China, but maybe it is different over in Cambodia?

One to one usually comes after a few years here and you have built up a reputation.
You said: 'If I end up having to teach Engilsh, that will be alright.'
I have doubts that you would do this, as your post seems to indicate that this would be acceptable, but not desirable. If you don't enjoy it, your students would notice it.
Engilsh? LOL.

YES!!! There are not enough inexperienced and unqualified people here willing to take a "safe" NGO (or non-NGO) job with a comfortable salary. Just show up and one will practically be handed to you!whiteboy wrote:Would getting an NGO job be safe, pay a comfortable salary and be easy to get without a lot of previous experience in the field?
Other than the fact that China has nearly 100 times more people, is several times larger than Cambodia, and its big cities are thousands of kilometers away from ALL of Cambodia's big cities, Cambodia is the same as China.whiteboy wrote:If I end up having to teach Engilsh, that will be alright. Heaven forbid! That would put poor vlad out of business, he'd probably abandon this forum if there were no mistakes left for him to correct.whiteboy wrote:English*. Yes, sometimes I type too fast and make typos. I need to double check what I type before posting lol.

It can be a really tough act trying to secure work in a country like Cambodia as a foreigner, especially before you've even arrived. You really need to arrive first and network, talk to expats and well connected locals, rather than relying on job postings, which are not a reliable way to get a job anywhere these days. Yes there are opportunities other than English teaching, but my guess would be that most expats in Cambodia, like in neighboring Thailand and Vietnam, who are not teachers are probably running a business of some sort, usually a bar, restaurant or a small hotel/guesthouse, something like that. Indeed I have met quite a few expats in Cambodia who are doing exactly that. Mostly running bar/restaurants.
If you have some money to invest and are willing to take some risks, it's easier running a business in Cambodia than in most other countries in the region - the visa is the easiest thing and you don't really need to invest a minimum amount or hire a minimum number of local employees (unlike Thailand).

Or as a guy poetically put on my Saigon FB page: "vagina opens wallets, wallets opens vagina. Ying-Yang of life."whiteboy wrote:This wasn't the case for me in Japan and in China. Anyway, I've seen a number of Westerners managing or serving in hotels & bungalows & bars. Some IT guys, but they mostly work remotely. And some in NGOs.
