Hello everyone,
I'm thinking about moving to Phnom Penh in the future. But I'm not quite sure about the career chances there.
I'm Alexander 30 years old and living in Germany. My dream is to move to Cambodia.
So shortly my career background.
Currently I'm working as a technical sales for a machine manufacturing company for the beverage industry.
I have a Master degree in food economics and a Bachelor degree as a industrial engineer in food production and economics.
Originally I came from the brewing industry.
What do you think how easy it is to find a job in Phnom Penh with this background?
What would be the best way?
Thank you very much for your advises.
Alexander

Those sound like useful skills for here, and could possibly command a high salary. However I have no idea how you would go about getting a position in that area.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

I've lost count of the number of highly qualified and skilled westerners unable to find suitable career roles in Cambodia, unless you are posted there by a company. Most of the expats who are going ok are there running their own operations or have managed to find ways to work from overseas while living there.
I know I'm unloveable. You don't have to tell me. I don't have much in my life, but take it - it's yours.
There are some guys who were involved in craft beer production. No idea if they made it but I'd definitely look into that direction with your background.

Unfortunately that's also my opinion. You could potentially hit up factories producing food/beverages once you get here. However, I highly doubt they hire off the street. Much better if you explore options before leaving. Companies are more likely to hire from abroad than in country. Maybe look up German/European food processing companies operating in Cambodia. I don't know if any herr, but you never know. I know of a few German garment/footwear companies which employ expats, but that doesn't help you as it's not in your sector. This Charming Man wrote:I've lost count of the number of highly qualified and skilled westerners unable to find suitable career roles in Cambodia, unless you are posted there by a company. And you'll do it with a bloody smile on your face, feeling grateful every minute for the generous salary afforded to you.gavinmac wrote:You'll teach English and like it.

Wasn't there a guy who did pull that off for a while?
Thank you for your advises. I already had this thoughts that isn't so easy to find a good job there. I guess you have to be really lucky.
My company is also really international, but for Cambodia there isn't a chance. Singapore no problem and maybe Bangkok.
My feeling is that for the most international companies Cambodia isn't so interesting as a market. They have all a focus on China and India.
But I keep searching.

Why is your dream to move to Cambodia? It's not something most people aspire to.

With your credentials; you might want to see if your industry contacts have any path to Heineken, Singha or Carlsberg. But even those places groom locals up to feed off the low wage base. High salary/compensation positions are very limited. Depending on what form your employment might take you could live close by and spend time here a lot. Then maybe you could find something in a year or two that would keep you here. You may also decide that you like other places in the region better. There's no replacement for first hand knowledge.
