Hi All
New here. I've been to Cambodia a couple times and want to experience living there for a few years. Will give it a try for a few months to see if I can land a job.
I have around 9 years experience in Finance/Accounting and Data Analytics. I was wondering what is the best way to approach it here. I worked in London and now Hong Kong, just tired of working in this kind of environment and want to live somewhere a bit more adventurous without all that superfluous bs here.
I have extensive experience training people in finance, sales, Excel etc... Wondering what kind of job I could land here with this? I tried reaching out to some recruiters but they don't get back to me, probably because I'm not in Cambodia yet.
I would come with my wife who's Filipina and was waitress in bar in HK. Could she find decent job there as well?
Not really interested in teaching English as it's only my second language. I think long term I wanna build my own business there but want to be there before the region takes over China in manufacturing (like Vietnam). A mate is moving his factories from China to Cambodia so it looks like it's started already.
Finance job or teaching finance?

With that background I would probably look up the Cambodian Credit Bureau.
They have a pretty weak and young DB at the minute but have massive potential for growth. Could be an interesting time to get involved.

Why don't you go into (or help with) business with your friend who's moving his factory here? Truth be told, I'm surprised to hear he's moving a factory here, as the cost of electricity is relatively high as is labor, there's a low skilled workforce, and the trend is for factories (at least garment) to be moving out, not in. Your first job for him could be to analyze cost saving measures by implementing solar into his factory, something I think many factories here could benefit from.
Finance guys moving to this region from working in Hong Kong is a trend that's been going on for decades, with guys doing everything from owning bars to being CFOs to large companies here or starting their own conglomerates. After 9 years in Finance in London and HK I hope you have a large nest egg already and not too many shiny watches instead.
I hate to be pessimistic, but your wife will have a hard time finding work. I doubt you or her would think maybe $150-$200 a month waitressing here would be worth it. She may be able to find menial office work for a little more, but I'm guessing you'll be the breadwinner here.
Good luck and hopefully you'll find this forum somewhat useful, despite a lot of the blowhards here.

thanks, I will check these out. I don't have any watch but enough money to last more than a year without a job. Electricity does seem to be an issue in a lot of developing countries. With the price of solar panels going down fast I reckon there is an opportunity there.
My wife used to be a teacher so maybe she could go back to teaching so lets see.
I just want to go back to simpler life, I'm from a lower class background and just tired of living with people who never had to work when they were young. Bunch of spoiled brats
