Correct, they did the same with us, and so quite helpful and courteous in all, and why I hold the local staff working there in high regard. It took quite a bit of waiting, (nail biting) but in the end it came through, without any serious bribing at all. But the pictures were of importance as well, I recall, especially the ones holding the newborn etc.
For any Brits out there, do not bother contacting the embassy if you're having difficulty obtaining a local birth certificate for a newborn, they give zero fucks. They will just tell you they have no jurisdiction (the implication being that if they don't have jurisdiction then they have no reason to even bother trying to help). When you do eventually get the birth certificate and go to the next step of trying to obtain a British passport for your child, the embassy will again tell you they can't so much as answer basic questions about the process, let alone provide you with any assistance. They are beyond useless. I miss Stephen Bridges, that guy knew how to run an embassy.
Surely it will be policy that they are adhering to?Bubble T wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2019 12:32 pmFor any Brits out there, do not bother contacting the embassy if you're having difficulty obtaining a local birth certificate for a newborn, they give zero fucks. He also knew how to drink properly.
It has been a long time since we had a a half-decent Ambassador.

So what? By law my son was a British citizen from the moment he was born. He was then denied a birth certificate, which prevented me from being able to get his passport. If the embassy's policy is just to ignore it then it's a shit policy. We've just had testimony from American posters who were able to get their embassy to make simple phone calls to resolve the exact same situation.kinard wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2019 12:37 pmSurely it will be policy that they are adhering to?Bubble T wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2019 12:32 pmFor any Brits out there, do not bother contacting the embassy if you're having difficulty obtaining a local birth certificate for a newborn, they give zero fucks. Over the past few years the British embassy seems to have completely given up on providing even the most basic assistance to it's citizens. Whether they have done so as a matter of policy or though sheer incompetence/apathy is irrelevant, the end result is the same.
That was my point. Policy must have changed and it wouldn't matter if Bridges was still there or not.
And it must be policy, otherwise their assistance would be on a case by case basis and I doubt very much if that is so.

Who sets the policy, and what kind of person agrees to take a job knowing there are policies in place preventing them from carrying out that job effectively? Any ambassador worth their salt would walk away in disgust if there were policies put in place to prevent them from rendering basic assistance to their citizens.
Of course it's case by case. If an embassy employee was in the same situation do you really think their colleagues would just ignore it and allow the child to remain trapped here with no documentation?
Bottom line is that there were Americans here advising people on the very reasonable assistance provided to them by their embassy when their kids were denied birth certificates. I posted to make sure that any British citizens reading this understand that their embassy won't take similar action, or any action at all. I'm not interested in any excuses. They are fundamentally useless and that is what matters in situations like these.
