Cars in Cambodia
I'm afraid to buy a moto in PP and ride it (I never used moto and I don't like).
Does somebody own a car ? Is it easy to buy a 2nd hand car in Cambo and is it expensive (compact car) ? What about insurance for foreigner ? Howmuch by month ?
Does somebody imported his own car in Cambodia? Etc... All informations are welcome.
Thanks.

Well French I am sure someone that lives there full time could give you a better answer but yes you can buy a car in Cambodia. But I would have to question why you would want to? If you are in an accident, it will be your fault. So unless you want to go ahead and hire a khmer driver I don't really think I would want to be driving a car around PP. Cars can be had fairly cheaply for a used Camary there. I think someone who lives there could give you a more accurate price. I know last time I looked they seemed to be a little more than the prices here in the States. By the way my sister in-law is selling a 94 Camary in PP now for about $4000.
As for trying to bring your own car into Cambodia don't even try. It would cost you way more money in fees(bribes) to get it into Cambodia than it is worth. My friend(Canadian-Khmer) has brought a couple of cars into Cambodia without a problem, but his wifes uncle is head of the Cambodian Military. So unless you have some very good connections it would cost far more than just buying one there.
Hopefully, next month, I will be there for a few weeks. Have fun and good luck.

You said your after a compact, you can pick up a small Tico for around $1000, and you don't need insurance, all insurance covers here is breakdown and your own repairs any how, so its pretty much worthless in a country where everybody and there dog know how to pull an engine apart.
I think a car is the way to go, lets face it, bikes are deathtraps, how many of us on this board can say we've seen our life flash before our eyes on Cambodia's roads. Year you might have a knock and be blamed, but the same goes for a bike too.
And as for a driver? There is nothing I find funnier in this world than seeing Barrangs sitting in the back seat of a car that is worth less than a TV.

Thanks for the informations, I'll see about cars in Cambo and I will put on the forum all the infos I will have.
Perhaps somebody can be interested...
I like my skeletal structure to remain in its present form and it might
make it harder to get robbed. You can carry a nice arsenal with you also.
I'll be doing some late night driving.
Downsides would be finding parking?? Where to park at your apt without
getting stripped down or stolen...
I just need a small chitbox with tinted windows so they dont see a barang ATM
behind the wheel.
Thanks in advance for all details/headaches etc....

So, am I right in thinking that if ,for example, you prang someones Mercedes, they are gonna want the damage payed for, pronto?you don't need insurance, all insurance covers here is breakdown and your own repairs any how, so its pretty much worthless
Whats the situation with driving licences, do you need an international driving licence? Do you get pulled and asked to show documentation or do you just pay for a drink? Is it possible to buy a Khmer licence? Im a good enough driver, Im just banned!

Year an international driving licence is fine, but occationally a dirty copper will string you a line about needing a Khmer licence, if they try that one just demand a ticket and they will soon shut up as they know they're talking shite.
Hanky just bring your old licence, I'm sure the PPPD haven't got a hook up to the DVLA.

Ya I need an international driving liccence, I did it. Easy and low cost ! You can have it in PP at your ambassade. As told my cambodia ambassade in Paris a frenchman does not need a Cambodia licence just the international licence driving (same as you need in US when you come from Europe).

Well, I'm in contact with "Indochina assurance" does somebody know them ? they told me that I can buy a car, drive and I can have a "multirisk" assurance in Cambodia, but I don't know the price, it's depending to the car...
As I think to buy a 4X4 or maybe a compact car, they don't know the price before I know what kind of car I can buy.
Do the big US 4X4 cars are expensive here ???? I never seen cabriolet cars in PP, nobody has it? Dangerous !!!! I sold my German sport cabriolet in france and I can be very interested by a cab in PP...

DVLA is the driver and vehicle licencing agency for U.K., I presume PPPD is similiar for Cambodia. What is PPPD and DVLA?
I havent got my licence anymore, and I aint gonna get a new one off them for a few years, so what are the chances of getting a Cambodian one, would you need good spoken Khmer? Couldn`t you pay someone to fix one up?
PPPD = Phnom Penh Police Department, no?
I checked out driving licenses in PP a few weeks ago... The international ones are not available (as far as I can tell), but a Khmer license is a quick fix at $70. You need to take a practical test, if you don't want to I'm pretty sure you can buy your way out of it anyways...
godspeed, brave soul...
