Right:
More or less upon arrival in this country, I decided upon buying a bike. Not knowing anything about bikes, I bought an AX-1 for $1200 from Lucky One. It seemed like a good idea at the time, it was the least frightening 250 in the shop.
Now, however, I find myself in Mondulkiri for at least a month, the rains are coming on, and I have discovered that the AX-1 really isn't fit for mud and rocks and similar annoying objects so often found in one's way out here.
What I'm asking is if anyone has any suggestions regarding the mudflap that sits so close to the front wheel... can i move it somehow? can i take it off without condemning my engine to certain death? Any other things I should/could do to it to make it more fit for the rough terrain?
Any suggestion appreciated.
Thanks.

I kicked mine once and it really hurt my foot. The Governor wrote:Sell it and buy an XR/TTR/CRM/Djabel, they're more reliable, can go places an AX-1 could never dream of and can take a real kicking if you take care of them properly, or if like me you don't take care of it because your lazy, they can still take a good kicking.Any suggestion appreciated.
Hey, whats the name of that bike.. its like an 250XR, but a little better.. more grunt.. is it an 250XLR? Yeah, I think it is.. Id get one of those... I borrowed one from a friend for 'a few days'.. I never wanted to give it back. Everytime I turned the throttle, heads turned, and I was off! Racey!

I can completely sympathise as I did the same thing as you. I had very little experience with bikes so went with the AX1. Unfortunately it is a trail/road bike hybrid and not nearly as solid in bad conditions as the larger Djebel/XR/Baja. I would trade up asap rather than try any mechanic intrigue.
The AX1 is a great bike for easy roads and my experience is that their engines are good, but go for a bigger and better version if you can. Good luck.

thank you, everyone, for your informative replies.
however:
my problem is that i'm already out here in the land of slipping mud, and i don't think any of the passing tough expat-types are very keen on trading bikes with me... so a new one is kind of not an option at this moment. well, better dig through my stuff, find the swiss army knife, a couple of bananas and a kromah and ponder the issue over a bowl of prohoc... macgyver, anyone?

I agree on the AX-1 for the better roads... it's a lovely, smooth ride, and it's even possible to talk to an optional passenger. I like it. but not here.
