No taxis in Phnom Penh?
Have an important question. Now living in Vietnam but will leave this month or soon. I went to Phnom Penh once in May and when I was there people said there are no taxi cars, only motorbikes. When I arrive to PP I will most likley arrive at that bus station near the Central Market and then want to make my way to a guesthouse. I'll have 3 full size bags so no way a motorbike would work. Perhaps a Cyclo bike might but then I'd need 2 (one for me, one for bags).
Is it true there are hardly no taxis in PP? I also thought I remember reading in a guidebook the same thing. If so, any recommendations?

Taxi Vanta have a good reliable rep, plus are owned by a barang to ensure some level of service (maybe) Although I can not find the phone number off-hand - anyone ?
Personally when I need a larger than moto load for about town travel I have a pet tuk-tuk driver.
He speaks perfect English, knows not only where streets are, but also where places are, doubles up as a tour-guide for when I have out of country guests and he is so honest, I do not believe he is actually Khmer; suspect that he is Swiss and has had a spray job.
PM me if you want contact details for him.

There are a few taxis around, but very few. There are any number of guys with cars whom you can hire by the day or week, but usually they hang out in front of one of the hotels. Probably your best best will be a tuk tuk. Big enough for one person and a few bags. Some guest houses/hotels will pick you up upon arrival. It wouldn't hurt to ask.

When you get to Psar Thmei, you'll probably be besieged by moto drivers. If you want a taxi, look for the guys standing by cars. If you mention to a moto driver that you want a taxi, they will say "Yes, yes I have taxi," when in reality, they will simply walk you ten meters to a real taxi driver, and then your fare is higher because the moto driver gets a finder's fee.
alright, great points... I'll probably need to take a ride from that Central Market maybe to a cheap guesthouse near the lake. Although I dread having to stay there, the price will be my main factor in my first week or two of job search. (Rooms there are about $3 a night yah? Complete with dreadlock foreign neighbors, hope I don't have to share a shower with them.) Hope the rooms there are well locked.
Anyways didn't know there are plenty of taxis at CM. Should have opened my eyes more last time, but I wasn't on the look out for them before...

believe it or not at the "frogshack24" at the lake, you can sleep for free as long as you buy one drink per day, you do sleep on the attic of the shed basicly, so no privacy or luxury, but just a matras and I believe a musquito- net.
for 2 dollars you have your own room, with bed and musquito net and nothing else.
life can be cheap, if you can do without luxury.

The Lakeside isnt so bad!!!
If you go to Happy Guesthouse, you can get a room for $2 (the real price).
Ask for the big room(upstairs at the back) with the big metal door. Its the best room in the place. Its the size of 2 rooms, has a massive steel door with a padlock as big as your hand, and has 2 big windows on each side of the room.. great for a breeze coming through.
Also it is far away from the noise of the main lounge area (blaring DVD's and stereo). Plus, because it is upstairs, it is the last part of the guesthouse to be filled, so usually you have the whole floor to your self, as well as the shower and bathroom.
Plus if you are staying for a while it is good, cos it has a table and a place to hang your work clothes.
I stayed in that room for 3 months. (If it's full, make sure you get it when the tyraveller leaves.)
