So what do you self righteous big tippers consider normal?
I prefer not to tip unless it is deserved, perhaps I tip too much on occasion.
I am currently in the Philippines, so prices in PHP.

Thailand beame unaffordable because farangs insisted on tipping regardless of how bad the service was.
Tipping is a dirty practice encouraged by employers that dont pay enough..
I sometimes leave 1000 riel in a restaraunt but only if the waitress is hot and did not break a dollar into riels to get me to tip.

So it was between the Notorious Tightwads and the Arrogant Invader Folk, right?
Yes, son, but the latter don't know it yet, cause they can't read. Or spell. You see their insane logic blames people for not tipping lowly paid staff, but protects and ignores the culpability of the owner, who in most cases is way richer than most of his customers.
But Daddy, isn't there a law about a minimum wage in their country?
Of course, son, but that law doesn't apply to the rich, and the goons choose not to see it. It's a sly guilt trip that attempts to shift responsibility from the rich employer to the poorer customers.
But Daddy, isn't that unethical and immoral?
You're getting the idea, son.

guilty...
will only tip for good service, but have no percentage level that I adhere to.. I have tipped 10$ for a 5$ burger at molly malones (SR) just because the serving girl had a ready smile, very attentive and was always just a wave away without being "clingy".. sometimes a few dollars to the foot massage girl, that worships me tootsies for an hour if she does a good job, but it usually works out to around 2/3 dollars a time for most things.. irrespective of the price.. and nothing on a 250€ champagne and steak feast at a 5 star restaurant because the "medium well" was not well enough despite being very specific, I realize that this could of been a kitchen error and not a front of house error, but I have never separated the two... on a side note, I have left more than one restaurant when a chef refuses to cook a steak the way I want it..
Some (actually quite a few..) call me arrogant, but I work damn hard for my money, I regularly work 14hrs a day and maybe have 2 days off a month, In a year, I probably dont work 30 days in total.. I am great at what I do and demand and receive a good wage for a service that if I am not completely satisfied is a good job, will not even charge for.. if you want a slice, you had better bring you "A" game, because it was earnt by me playing mine.

"I think this comes down to a matter of opinion on whether you would like to have the power to decide for yourself on what you think the service staff deserves (to be paid) for the service they provided, or if you prefer to have that decision made for you by someone else."
It also provides the service staff a direct tangible incentive to provide good service. If they were paid the same no matter what they did, then that incentive wouldn't exist.
I was told there would be cake.

In the English language, tip may refer to:
(Worldwide): a gratuity (a voluntary additional payment made for services rendered)
Having worked behind a bar in the UK where tipping is not the norm.
I can say when i took the job i knew the hourly rate of pay wasn´t great but then the work wasn´t hard or particularly skilled.
When customers did tip or buy me a beer it was much appreciated, and i understood this as a reward for being welcoming, attentive and having some banter. But that was all part of the job i was being paid to do, you got that service if you tipped or not.
I appreciate that the States has a tipping culture, but that it is demanded when service is poor is hilarious.
That i am expected to give some sour-faced cow 10% for simply pulling a 1 beer out of a fridge and opening it is a joke!
If you can´t survive on minimum wage, educate yourself and get a better job.
Personally i will tip for exceptional service, 10% is sometimes appropriate* but to have want my voluntary additional payment should be dictated to me rubs me up the wrong way! asking or demanding a tip is more likely to get you a slap
*never in Cambodia, it is simply a vulgar display of wealth! the tip should be based not on the cost of your meal, but in relation to the staffs daily wage

I'm not against tipping, please don't get me wrong.
I almost always tip, and the amount usually varies, but if I get decent service and I can see the waiter/waitress is making an effort, then I will make sure they get a decent tip.
If they don't give a damn and are sullen all the time, I fail to see why I should pay for that.
My employer wouldn't keep me on if I displayed a similar attitude.

The employer does pay the employee, vladimir wrote:I'm with Mr. White.
The employer should pay the employee.
The tipping system encourages employers to reduce wages and pocket the difference.
15%? No chance!
But if what they receive is fix, then will not get good services.
When you gives them a little tips, you usually get better service as it means they have incentive to do that little extra.
