Poipet: The good, the bad & the ugly
Looking for the inside scoop on Poipet as a place of residence; not just a pass through.
Please spare me the obvious one-liners about how much of a hole Poipet is; looking for actual information from people who have spent time there, specifically: what the surrounding countryside is like, what kind of houses (not apartments) you can rent, the expat community there, markets, daily life etc...
Thanks in advance.

There are probably a few good people and a some bad people there, and they're all ugly in a sandstorm shithole kind of way.
I say go there for a year, and write a blog about it.

Poipet has some very good attractions. Its a city based on sin. Whatever your vice, Poipet has an abundance. Still, I wouldn't want to live in the shithole when Siem Reap is so close or set up shop in Thailand.

Many tourists coming through over land are still petrified of Poipet and the scams of old. You could probably do quite well shepherding them through, if you don't mind tussling with the mafia.
There are a couple of Westerners living there, one even used to post here. It's not great but there's worse IMO.

There's a good road out of there.

Ha! Exactly the responses I thought I was going to get.
I've only been in PP & the South; there were areas of PP that seemed pretty dicey...no comparison?
Guess we'll just have to make the best of it.

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

It would make a nice high stakes bet with your friends.
For example, bet on a team at the superbowl tomorrow, if you lose, you have to live in poipet for the month.

Well, if you have a healthy yamma/ice habit, enjoy banging skanks of all ages and want to stroll around desserted and bloody dodgy dark streets at night - go ahead and live there.Cambobound wrote:Looking for the inside scoop on Poipet as a place of residence; not just a pass through.

But seriously mate, if you are not a troll - give it a miss yeah.
And I am speaking from experience. One night I got wasted in Poipet and missed the border closing times. I had no choice but to stay there for the night. After numerous offers of yamma and teenage girls on the way to a hotel, I was glad to be somewhere where I could rest my head for the night.
Wrong! I get a knock on the door late at night. When I open it about four khmer punks barge pass me and just start going through my room. Then they sit on my bed. Feeling a tad vulnerable to say the least I quickly opened up my shoulder bag and emptied the contents on the bed. Inside was a couple cans of beer and a shit mp3 player.
After offering these gentlemen a beer, they politely declined and left the room. That was my first thought of defense - show them that I had nothing of real value.
1st and last night in Poipish for me!

More Poipet stories please? I have heard it is a shithole by everyone but it would be interesting ot hear some more actual tales.
Does anyone know the K440 Username of the guy who used to live there?
