Portable Airconditioners
Wondering if anyone has any info on portable airconds?
I'm looking for one that will cool a small bedroom without too much noise so we can sleep.
Any recommendations or models to avoid greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

You can buy an air cooler for under $100. It's good for a medium-sized room.
I came, I argued, I'm out
Air coolers or Air Conditioners. ???andyinasia wrote:You can buy an air cooler for under $100. It's good for a medium-sized room.
The portable Air conditioners still need to be vented outside via a window or doorway - overall not all that effective but quite ok for a bedroom.
The air coolers ( I'm assuming you are talking about evaporation coolers ) sometimes struggle due to the moisture level in the air.
As dumb as it may sound, I've found that a good ceiling fan can provide all the cooling needed.
I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

You load ice in it and it sprays invisible jets of cold moisture into the air. Very pleasant.scoffer wrote:Air coolers or Air Conditioners. ???andyinasia wrote:You can buy an air cooler for under $100. It's good for a medium-sized room.

I looked at a couple of air coolers today, but wasn't convinced they would be much chop as the house is so humid all the time. Mind you, it worked really well in their refrigerated aircond show room!andyinasia wrote:You load ice in it and it sprays invisible jets of cold moisture into the air. However, AIA you may have the answer with ice in the water. Where did you see them for around $100? The cheapest I saw today was $165 which is way too much for a fan with water running around in it. I was really looking for a portable airconditioner over the cooler but perhaps the ice trick will do the job well enough.
Scoffer - I wish this place had ceiling fans, but it is not an option unfortunately. I find it hard to believe that ceiling fans aren't in every bedroom here, I'm sure it was an oversight by the same recalcitrant dwarf who always makes sure there is a low doorway for me to bang my head on.

I'll get back to you tomorrow on that since the wife bought one for the bedroom in the cafe, where she is right now.Nasty Canasta wrote:I looked at a couple of air coolers today, but wasn't convinced they would be much chop as the house is so humid all the time. Buy a 2nd hand aircon froma decent company, cost about $100, sell it to the owner or take it with you when you go. It will do the job for a 25m2 room. Installation is about $20.

That's assuming the owner is happy with you knocking holes in the wall.vladimir wrote:Buy a 2nd hand aircon froma decent company, cost about $100, sell it to the owner or take it with you when you go. It will do the job for a 25m2 room. Installation is about $20.

I think most owners would be willing to let you punch a 4" hole in the wall for $5 or less
The thought of advertising an aircon room as opposed to a room in the future..and having a barang (read better-paying) tenant.
Then again, Khmers don't care about money, they're too spiritual, lol...

The ice coolers might be better for the boonies with 3500r/kwh electric, when it's on at all.
Do they take the big blocks of ice that are delivered, or are they plastic cartridges that you're supposed to put in your large freezer?

I think the staff just use the same ice as they prepare for drinks - ie small blocks they chipped off the large block. I'll know more when the missus gets back.OnCore wrote:The ice coolers might be better for the boonies with 3500r/kwh electric, when it's on at all.

Sorry to labour it Vlad, but can you suggest a decent company?vladimir wrote:Buy a 2nd hand aircon froma decent company, cost about $100, sell it to the owner or take it with you when you go. It will do the job for a 25m2 room. Installation is about $20.
The hole in the wall is already there so if I could get out of it for around $120 it sounds like the way to go. I'll wait and see what AIA comes back with first.

She's back. She did also buy 2 second-hand airconditioners - $155 each (after hard bargaining). One packed up after a couple of weeks and the shop exchanged it due to the warranty. Down Kampuchea Krom (quite far) next to Gold One computer shop (where we got out internet cafe computers). Air cooler $95, #395 Monivong Bvd (opp. Wat Koh).Nasty Canasta wrote:Sorry to labour it Vlad, but can you suggest a decent company?vladimir wrote:Buy a 2nd hand aircon froma decent company, cost about $100, sell it to the owner or take it with you when you go. @NC: I had a friend of mine buy it for me, so I don't know the name, but there are lots of small places, especially near the circle in Toul Kork.
There used to be a reasonable shop opposite Walkabout, don't know if it's still there.
