Your best bet is if you dont already know how to cook Mexican food is to use bittorrent and download some cookbooks and go from there. The only place I found any decent food in the Spanish/Mexican/Tex-Mex/Cuban/Peurtorican style in Asia that I liked was Jose's in Nong Kai but thats a little far for a take out.
re the sour cream, try yogurt. i know, a poor substitute, but readily available and not too far off the mark.Willem wrote:I found sour cream at Bayon today...but it's light, I wouldn't classify the quantity as shitloads, and it was $2.50. Gay...and they had no avocados. Fuckin' shit country.
While I'm complaining...has anyone had to share a fridge with khmers? I guess it's just because they're from Prey Veng, and have never had a fridge before...but they're just really bad at using fridges, like they don't understand that if I buy ice cream, and put it in the freezer, it's not ok to just move it into the fridge...and they don't understand that if they put something in the freezer, some fruit for example, it will freeze. Anyone interested on working on a fridge education booklet with me? Fuckin' khmers. It's actually pretty interesting when it's not annoying me.
re avocados. when i was living in PP i had an insane desire for guacamole but could not find any avocados. then one day as i was strolling through the market, there they were. this was at psar kandall. they were not there long and i can't remember what month, but they do exist in some manner. try veggies on street 240. pricey but probably available.
re the frig. i agree with your complaints. i too had the ice cream transferred to the frig. i just try to remember that this is certainly the first refrigerator they have used. in addition they have had no reference to other depictions of refrigerator usage; no western tv culture pumped down their throats 24/7, no home ec in school, no refer at home. so i scream and holler to impress my point and then wait for the next catastrophe.
life here may be difficult, but at least it keeps the blood flowing.
Yeah, I think Bayon get sour cream in once a month or something. I hadn't seen it in there before, and then yesterday, there was heaps (but light).
The fridge thing is more amusing to me than anything. But it is annoying, in that my freezer has about 2cm of ice on the bottom of it. What's difficult though, is my poor khmer means that I can't really explain anything to the women that live with me. So whenever I want to explain something complex, like that papaya in the freezer will freeze, then will be shithouse when it thaws, I have to wait until my friend gets home (husband/brother in law of the women in the house)...and they're often not that comfortable getting lessons on kitchen stuff from a man. Anyway...no big deal...just a good thing to have a rant about once in a while.
What's veggies? A fruit'n'veg shop for barang?
I've seen avos at Bayon before, but since I've actually wanted to buy some, I haven't been able to get any.

The avacadoes you saw at the market probably came from Ratnakiri. They have a brief season there. I think its in May but I could be completely wrong.
Cantina have a good Guacamole.

'veggies' is a barang fruit, cheese, vegetable shop on street 240. high prices, but stuff not readily available elsewhere. they also have a branch in SGN. visit their cold storage room on a hot day for a cheap thrill. it really is cold!
down the street is 'the shop' where they have very good pastries and breads. again not cheap but available.
lucky market is getting better at providing barang kind of food stuff.
lucky, bayon, thai huot, big a, pencil. these are the main grocery markets for barangs. prices between these stores tend to be competitive. i personally don't like big a as i have never felt that i, as a barang, was welcome there. i have heard the same from others.

Khmers have a word that translates to 'butter fruit'. Is this the same as Avocado.Vox Clamantis wrote:The avacadoes you saw at the market probably came from Ratnakiri. They have a brief season there. I think its in May but I could be completely wrong.

Avacados are grown in Vietnam and are widely available there. Most of the avacados found in cambodia are grown in Vietnam, but there are some orchards in the north-east of Cambodia. I just finished helping my wife's cousin (agriculture major) do her report on avacados, so thanks to some interesting papers published to the web by the good people at UC Davis in California, I feel like I know enough now to start my own orchard. I also have all of my relatives here on the lookout for them, so I'll post the location here just as soon as they turn up in the markets.
Dr S, I'll ask my cousin about the Khmer name for avacodos when I see her again.
