A guy from New Caledonia told me that in there they have wild raspberries (runaways, originally imported by the Brits?) and they can grow strawberries too. The temperature is fairly similar to Cambodia, but about 5 C cooler... So I wonder if it would be possible to grow strawberries and raspberries in Cambodia, too, is the temperature that critical? The guy suggested that maybe it could be tried in Mondulkiri and Rattanakiri. Maybe they have a different varieties in New Caledonia, more suitable for hot climates? If it was successful to grow them, what else would grow as well?
What's your take on this? If possible to grow, would it be anyhow commercially feasible? I'm not talking big farms like in the west but a small niche for catering to those rich(er) guys what want something more exotic than mangoes. Now I'm not thinking of setting up a farm I'm just wondering about the theoretical possibility.
Growing strawberries?
My wife regularly informs me that strawberries come from Ratanakiri.
Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men.
temperate varieties require a longer day to flower, but there are day-neutral varieties too.
You'll need to grow them suspended or hydroponically to keep the ants off I would think.
Anyone seen the plants (strawberries) for sale?
You can grow a whole row's worth in a barrel or similar by drilling a bunch of holes in the side of it and pushing a plant into each hole. A little bit of shade from the direct sun (that green hessian cover would do it) and they should fruit all year round i would think.
Rasps like a failry acidic soil, good drainage and a cold winter, I think.
Oh, and for the ants, you can stick the barrel in a big water dish so the bastards drown on attempted ingress.

I've heard they are grown in Rattanakiri and know that they are grown in the Central Highlands in Vietnam in large numbers.

when folks asked me about growing strawberries, i always said "not very likely", as they need very cool nights for the flowers/fruit to set. and cool temps when they are dormant.
But...... after reading this, I lay in my hammock corrected.

Cambodian Real Organic Products
To All,
About a year ago, I have met a master agronomist from CA by the name of Dr. Jim Barlow. Dr. Barlow had approached me about his biological products (SC27, SC27N and more) that help & promote roots growth for plants.
To make long story short, Dr. Jim sent me samples of the product and I applied on His Excellent's Rice Farm in Takeo province. The pilot program had an amazing result. The yield was about 3 folds of what the local farmers get.
Late in November 2010, Dr. Jim Barlow, Phaneth Choup, and myself Kimmy L. Soth with His Excellency had decide to o do another pilot project for Strawberry in Mondulkiri. There were 5 spicies of strawberries were brought from CA. The young plants had to be quickly planted after it arrived in Cambodia. We chose an existing property known as Long Vibol II's for our pilot project.
Three months later, we have an amazing result. The color of the strawberry is superb, the taste is comparable to California's strawberry, but the size is a bit smaller.
Now, Cambodian can feel proud of what could be grown at home. We still have more improvement for next season. More to come.....
Sincerely,
KS

Why, oh why, didn't I take the Blue pill?
Hi, does anyone know the best variety of strawberry plants that would more suit the Cambodian climate?
Quite a few in Thailand and the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia are famous for them, I would think similar to those?

I was going to make a joke about buying strawberries in Cambodia, but I don’t know how to pun it.
