Hi,
How much would it roughly cost to get a maid to come once per week to clean and do laundry? How much would it cost if she comes twice per week? I'm quite clean and my current place is a shoebox so would really take like 15 minutes to dust, sweep and mop. I mainly ask because I go through a ton of laundry and I figure it would be financially wiser to get a maid. Plus I'm getting tired of having to wait like 3 days for clothes. Do I have to give her the keys or can she come when I'm there?

We pay $50 p/m for a full time live in maid who does everything - cook, clean, wash, shop, errands - she is a good worker and even speaks a little English.
You would expect to pay about between $5 - 8 per week for 2 visits if you had a mountain of washing - no one likes doing that.....
We are in SR - I do not know anyone in PP I could recommend - workers are more expensive there too...especially for barangs.

Most of the expats I know pay $5 per half-day, so $40/month for 2 days a week and $60/month for 3 days a week. This is more than double what Khmers generally pay.

I'm probably getting ripped off, but I pay mine well over $100 a month. She makes the most sublime curries & salads, though. She lives in, making breakfast and coming back to make dinner. The ironing alone makes it worthwhile for me - someone offered another maid to do the same for about 80/month, but I'm happy with my current maid. She can be trusted not to nick anything and her cooking is great. Fish n Chips, Ham Salad, Chilli Con Carne - I wouldn't swap her for anything. Alright, truth compels me to admit I pay $160.
Anyone who pays a measly $60/month for 3 days/week is stingy, I reckon. It's about 5 Bucks a day, I pay, but she used to be the cook in a Barang-owned bar/restaurant. She makes Khmer & Western nosh and I love it! I'm starving just writing this...fish n chips beckons...

Just to be clear, the above mentioned $60/mo was for half days. You're not getting ripped off at $160 unless the cleaner is demanding that but you certainly are paying above market.

. We pay exactly the same here in pp for our live in. that's the real rate for a provincial lass who comes to the city .anyone who pays much more is a donk. Go over to the Nazi network and see how much they overpay.it's a joke.

lol way above market. I figured 20-25$ would be fair for 4 visits. Works out to like 6 hours of work tops. Then again I'm not asking for cooking, just 20 mins of sweeping and 40-60 mins of doing laundry per week.

I think if you factor 75c an hour you're being fair. clearly you have never seen a Khmer clean before. Double the time half the result.

I don't think I'm paying way over the odds. I'm not a 'donk' either, I hope. Yes, paying a bit over the odds, but for someone I can trust absolutely, that's okay. Her cooking is sublime, she's always there on time, doesn't complain and doesn't 'over work' (finding things to be done that don't actually need doing) or hover around. She's like a good waitress - there if I need her, seen and not heard. She's one in a million!
I see your point, thombarang, about prices being pushed up - apartments are well over-priced now, thanks to organisations paying exorbitant rates/rents. I won't do that, but for an honest individual, I will pay an honest rate for an honest month's work. Heck, my dear mum scrubbed people's floors clean on her hands and knees to earn a few extra bob, so I appreciate hard-working, honest folk.

In the interests of helping her and her family, any chance you would tell her I'll giver her two-fitty? Probably considerably less work: bit of ironing etc.

How much would it be if you just wanted someone to cook for you? Say 3 or 4 times per week? Don't need cleaning etc

Rob, I'll put it to her. If she gets more dosh, good luck to her. I was going to introduce her to dv8 at The Cavern - a good wage for her, but she wanted to keep her job at mine. Seriously, she is honest and cooks well.

Back in the west when a service provider such as a mechanic or tradesman fulfils their duties do you pay them ( well ) more than they are entitled ? No. So why are you doing it here ? A university graduate with one year experience here gets paid $220 or so a month for 160 hours. Do the math yourself and then consider what house help should be paid.
