First off hi to everyone, known about this board for a quite a while now and have been meaning to signup.
I spent approx. 1 month travelling around Cambodia last October and Phnom Penh is one of several places i have been considering within South-East Asia for setting up a small business (a bar or similar) as im uncertain as to whether teaching would be my thing.
Out of curiosity (and i know this is a very broad question) roughly how much would a small cafe/bar cost to obtain? Ideally i would like somewhere close to Boeng Kak Lake to hit the backpacker market?
Any feedback would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Nick 8)
PS : I forgot to add i would need to receive mail from home, are the mail boxes available in Phnom Penh pretty reliable or is it a bit hit and miss?

Backpackers don`t actually go out much, I never see any of them in the bars I frequent. They would probably try to haggle the price of a beer down, then share it between six of them and spend 4 hours drinking it, while swopping anecdotes about the muddy road from Poipet, its really muddy you know?
Opening another bar in Phnom Penh is totally pointless, there are hundreds of bars, and the vast majority are empty most of the time.

Thanks for your replies.
Hmm...will have to have a think on things. I quite liked Phnom Penh but there are also a few other places i like on the SEA trail (Vang Vieng) and especially Chiang Mai (which i spent 6 months of this year in).
Maybe its a case of coming up with something more original <grin>.

Backpackers do indeed go out. I can attest to that, as I lived for 4 months on the Lake myself, before finally finding a home.
Sure, they will hang around the guesthouse watching movies for a few nights, but once youve seen the Killing Fields 4 times, it tends to drive you out.
I observed that backpackers go out quite a lot. It is always Heart Of Darkness that gets there custom though... but I guess that is because where all the moto drivers suggest that they go.
There are lots of places set up around the Lake just to cater for the backpackers and if you came up with a UNIQUE idea, you could do well. I know a few people who run businesses there. One has been very successful (partnering with a trustworthy young Khmer), and with the exception of one (who has poor location), the others get by, but dont make huge amounts of money.
Keep in mind the Lake is not a stable investment, as it could be knocked down any day.
Elsewhere in the city there are plenty of bars already, so unless you are located right near the lazy to lave backpackers, you would need something unique for it to be successful..

Yawn. Get with the program dude. Compared with the average bar-hopping hard-drinking ex-pat, a backpacker who goes to a closed down bar doesn`t quite make it. Go ahead, try to get blood out of a stone, what would I know anyway?Doctor Seuss wrote: I observed that backpackers go out quite a lot. This is my experience from when I lived on the lakeside. I spent many of those 4 months accompanying them when they went out.
Whilst I havent lived on the lakeside in along time, and the heart of darkness has since closed, I cant imagine that backpacker nature in general has changed that much. They are still people that cary backpacks, have 4 sets of clothes, drink every night, eat cheap food, and look for something to do at night time, arent they?
