Girl (might be) moving to Cambodia. Looking for a relatively quiet, safe, nice neighborhood. What are my options?
All i saw on the net is colonial mansions, imperial garden, embassy place, himawari -- nice but very expensive.
What can one get for say, US$500 to US $1000 per month?

I`m presuming you want an appartment, in which case you should be able to get something very nice in that price range. The places advertised on web-sites and estate agents are well overpriced. Just for example I looked at a 6 bedroom unfurnished house just off Sihanouk Boulevard last week, it had huge balconies and safe parking, it could have done with a lick of paint(not too badly), all for $500.luzviminda wrote: What can one get for say, US$500 to US $1000 per month?

I know an American guy who's perfectly happy with his $30 a month studio. $130 a month will get you a furnished one bedroom with air-con, washing machine, etc. I was happy paying $260 a month for my old place, until I found out that I was being overcharged and could have a villa for not much more.
Serviced apartments for foreigners are not good value here. They provide security gaurds, but the gaurds are paid $30 a month and are not likely to deter any burglars. In my case, the gaurds are the likely culprits in the theft of my motorcycle and they even tried to force tips from western visitors who came to my place. Take the time to find your own place and educate yourself as to what things actually cost here. It may look cheap when you first arrive, but soon enough you'll find that lots of your friends have twice the house for half of what you're paying.

Something in that price range will get you VERY flashy accomodation - probably too flashy for most people's linking.
There are quite a few real estate agents around. You could head up to the street where the Golden Sun/Bridge etc hotels are: there's a few real estate agents on that block. They'll take you around to look at places and you'll get a pretty good idea of what's available.
As for a nice area to live: I'd recommend Boeng Keng Kong (or BKK 1 if yo can't spell it - HA!). It's known as 'NGO Land' due to the number of barang homes and NGO offices there.

Am looking for the 100-130 per month room/studio as of this Wednesday, November 23rd.
Any advice on how to find such an apt. would be greatly appreciated. Am inclined to look around Walkabout area as that is the first place I lived back in 1999.
Suggestions from one friend who lives in PP is to hire a moto driver and drive around.

My places I got in the following the ways... all worked equally well.
- Went to real estate agent who did all the work for me (drove around the streets). He took us to 10 shit houses before he started to get an idea of what it was we wanted. Once we showed him the things we liked and disliked about the houses he was showing us,eventually he got the idea of what we were after, then only showed us those kinds of houses.
- got some moto drivers to do the same thing as above.
- did the same thing as above by ourselves. Bloody hot and hard work.
- sent word out amongst friends and waited for someone to move out of the place that they were in.
Good luck!
