My girl friend ownes a small plot of land just outside P.P.
We are thinking of building a small house, simple wooden place, about $3000 max.
Problem is there is no access to electricity.OK for her,go to bed when it gets dark, get up when it gets light.I however need a few creature comforts.
Im not talking air con or even hot water but the odd light bulb would not go amiss.
I dont fancy a generator competing with the dogs,so how about solar pannels? Is this possible or practical in Cambodia, anyone any idea.
Dont mind the investment, even if it costs as much as the house!

I really don't think that solar would be ideal in Cambodia but if all you wanted to do was power some light bulbs it would be easy to do. I have seen them on some buildings there. I think the major problem would be keeping them from getting stolen when you are away. I have no idea where you would get them or how much they would cost there. You can get get portable ones that you could take with you but that would be a major pain everytime you went away.
I think I would go with the generator idea. Honda makes some that are really very quiet, small and not that expensive. Just get a couple of batteries and keep them charged with the generator. You can then either get 12 volt lights and maybe a small tv, or put an inverter on it and run what you want. You still have to pay for fuel but unless you are living in the house all the time, it would take years to make up the difference in price with the solar.

I wouldnt trust solar panels.. theyd get ripped off too quickly.
Most Khmers just have a car battery that runs one light, a radio, and a TV. They getthe car battery charged once a week. After the battery is dead, they take it to get recharged.
You could get yourself a nice quite generator to dothe job of recharging the battery yourself as needed, this way you wouldnt have the ge going constantly.
If you get a chance to guy a gen in Thailand, do it. If you must buy one in Cambodia, PM me and Ill give you some details. There are so many scams going on with the selling of gens in cambodia that you rarely get what you paid for, or what you think you got, or even what the label says.
