Expensive Electronics - but surprisingly cheap Aircons?
I think one can say that in general electronics, motorbikes etc are more expensive in Cambodia than neighbour countries like Thailand, right?
Makes sense, 'cause it's produced there, not here.
I noticed, though, that AIRCONS seem to be an obvious exception, with 9000 Btu Aircons starting under 300,- US$.
Did you guys also notice, and wonder why that is so? Or am I just mistaken somehow?
If I'm right, what's the reason for aircons being so unusually cheap?

It's an evil plot by the Illuminati to mess with Cambodia's power supplies.

of note, the cheap aircon will nail you in the long run. the more expensive inverter units use a lot less power.
Those who begin coercive elimination of dissent soon find themselves exterminating dissenters. Compulsory unification of opinion achieves only the unanimity of the graveyard.

Beg to differ , my 12,000 BTU split unit has built in dehumidifier and heater , starts rapid on 12v dc through inverter , my unit is Akira and base price was $269.00 . An aircon is an aircon , only difference is quality by manufacturer etc and at times the installer .mrfusion wrote:Not sure if the aircon here is same as Thailand, The aircon here is different to say Australia, those here has no heating function.
It really isn't, and I'm sure you'll learn that everything Akira make is shit before too long.An aircon is an aircon
For example most aircons use AC induction motors, some have variable-frequency drives ("inverters"), and Daikin use DC reluctance motors, quite different, in terms of efficiency and reliability.
I'm interested in your setup though, what size inverter do you use, what batteries, do you charge with solar, how long do you run it and so on?
In theory with an "inverter" aircon you could power it directly from DC but I've only seen than on specialized solar-power units.
I'm surprised chilled-water aircon is not more popular, can you even buy it here?

I got an A/C that fits your description and I run it A LOT! At least 13 hours a day, every day.
Only raised my bill an extra $1 a day compared to when I used a fan instead.
I now pay 1300 per kilowatt.
So it seems like it costs about 300 riel, or $0.08 to run per hour.
The A/C at my old apartment would cost over $0.30 per hour to run paying the same rate, and you could see the meter FLYING! !
