Crap Water Pressure
Crap Water Pressure
Over the last few months, our mains water pressure has gradually been getting crapper and crapper. This morning I wanted a shower and there was not much more than a trickle! Enough is enough! I want to buy a tank to stick on the roof to solve this problem once and for all. Does anyone have any advice about what size one should buy and how much one can expect to pay?
Thanks in advance,
SD

If your roof is covered from the sun then you can buy a blue plastic tank, if it's not covered then you'll need stainless steel. They vary in price depending on the size, but a 2000 liter plastic tank which will last most families two days is about $350 (from memory, might be wrong).
If your water entry point is not from the roof but the street then it will be a tough install, you'll need to run a pipe from the street mains up to the roof to the tank and another back down to the mains point to go into the house. You'll also likely need a pump as the tank will likely only be a couple of meters above your shower so gravity won't produce much pressure.
The much more simple solution is to do what the locals do and keep a large bucket and scoop next to your shower and use that in the mornings when the pressure is down. On cold days (all five of them) you can boil a kettle and poor that into the bucket before showering.

Do you live in the outback ? Never had a that kind of pressure in a very long time ( or lack of ), as suggested , use a pail and baler , my wife still showers that way after many years in the city and i have no idea why .
Dont forget also.. 2000l of water will be 2k kgs.. OK for some flat roof spaces thats more another floor, but not all.
Otherwise comedy ensues

Thanks for the replies so far.
I forgot to mention that we live in a newish house and the plumbing is already fitted with a pipe on the roof. So I think I am right in saying that all we need to do is stick the tank up there and connect it.
The roof is half covered and half open, so I guess we can stick it on the covered part if that is best.
I wouldn't care if this was an occasional occurrence, but it is just about every morning now. Yes I could use a bucket. I could also bathe in the river but why the fuck should I?
I don't mind spending a bit to sort it, but would like to know that it will work.
Anyway, I'm sending one of the staff out to see what he can find.
Will update later.

use stainless and keep it in the sun and you have cheap hot(er) water.

This happened to me when I stayed on St. 241slavedog wrote:Over the last few months, our mains water pressure has gradually been getting crapper and crapper. The bastard landlord was stealing our water. And we were paying for all of it.The house was set up with only one incoming pipe, so we were paying for both apartments, and when he was using water, we had none.
We moved.
Get an independent plumber to come and check.

Before you go to all that trouble, check the back of the shower head for debris. A gradual decline in pressure over time with no good days says blockage build up to me.
Also noticed a big drop in pressure up where I live in Toul Kork, but only between 7am-8am on weekdays (consistently). Solved problem by getting up earlier as it is much easier than running up to the roof to open the valve for the tank on the roof. Yes, I have crazy blue pipe plumbing like only a Cambodian could manage, but it does work one way or another so mustn't grumble!
I do think there is a greater PPWSA issue here, I had a chat to some of the folks in the office and it seems I'm not alone in experiencing low pressure in the morning.

1. Build ten thousand apartments and 1000 more offices in Tuol Kork and more in the rest of the city.
2. Use the same pump stations you had 10 years ago, the same bore water pipe, and do not upgrade them.
3. What problem? What, me worry?

It is between about 7 and 8 a.m. that the problem is most noticeable. And our neighbours have the same problem (so unlikely to be the shower head).

I don't have much experience on this, but shouldn't it be automated, the valve will close when the tank is full.Spigzy wrote:t is much easier than running up to the roof to open the valve for the tank on the roof.

if the tank is full wouldn't just the back pressure prevent more water from coming in... then as you use it the water will start flowing again?

Did anyone notice the (only) water supply tower in the model for the Bokhor development from the recent Bokhor thread?
That's it in the intro screenshot above - just to the right of the larger building.
Cute.
