Shipping a container from Oz to PP
Shipping a container from Oz to PP
Hi, I'm thinking of shipping some stuff from Australia to Cambodia and wondered if anyone had any experience of doing such, and/or can recommend a shipping company please?
I'm not thinking of shipping furniture, just a smallish container of crockery, cutlery, books, picture frames, small electrical items, clothes. I guess maybe only 50 - 100kgs worth. Nothing that I would cry too much over if the ship went down, or customs refused to release it . See my next comment:
The other thing I'm wondering is how such a consignment will be received at PP. Would it be subject to tax? or maybe some extortionate bribe by the docking police/workers? If so, what's the damage likely to be?.....and could the cargo be pilfered? Many questions!
Thanks heaps in advance for any information. Cheers

If just a few kilos, you should ship in on a few pallets, no point in shipping a whole container if the volume will be small. Check the link at the top and google the Cambodia yellow pages to email some other companies to get quotes. There's one I liked but never used with a French guy as part of the staff. Can't recall the name. I'll check when I get home.
Can be done, but an alternative is to get it sent by air. If the price is right for you is to use a company like Jetta Express (www.jettaexcessbaggage.com.au), which had pretty reasonable rates - I had 100kilos a few years back, and it cost me around $3.50 a kilo from what I remember.
There is a bit of mucking around with customs (I'm not sure if this still applies as have been out of the country for a handful of years now), but you needed to write a letter to the Minister of Customs requesting importation of personal goods which have no commercial value (hence no tax). You will need to list everything you bring in, and take the letter and list to the Ministry (which was located on Monivong - probably still there, and other posters should be able to help here). You need to get several chops, before you can take it to the airport cargo, when there, you need to get a couple of other chops, pay for the holding (it isn't really wasn't that much). They will release the cargo, you then need to go through a customs check, and then free to go. This process probably realistically takes a couple of days, but I paid no bribes, no tax, and all the gear arrived safely with no damage. If you want to pay a couple of hundred bucks (maybe more), you can get ask the people at Thai air to actually do all this running around for you.

Thanks very much for your responses Much appreciated.
I've got a local quote of AU$600 to ship via sea 1 square metre of stuff (no weight restriction) on a pallet. Then there will be duties to pay on arrival at PP. So I'll probably go with this.
Thanks for the excellent tip about the letter to the Minister of Customs requesting importation of personal goods which have no commercial value (hence no tax) . I'll look into this further.
Cheers again

If you are going to spend a heap of money bringing stuff like that here It will be cheaper to purchase what you need herecrockery, cutlery, books, picture frames, small electrical items, clothes.
Can't be that important to you thenNothing that I would cry too much over if the ship went down

One cubic metre is a surprisingly small volume. Having had a previous life as a freight agent, I know how quickly a cubic metre fills up. $600 plus maybe another $100 this end seems a lot for general household items.
Maybe bring some of the key items with you on the flight, and buy common stuff like crockery, electrical items etc here.

That AUD 600 will get you to the port in Cambodia. then you will be slugged with 500 USD for customs clearance and import permit. 200 for port charges and delivery. AND they will try to charge you something for duties and taxes.... nobody gets away free... even if you pay tea money you are still paying. And you dont want to go through the headaches of letters the ministry that they may or may not reply too while your goods are sitting at the port collecting storage charges every day....so all up you are looking at a total of probably 1300.00 USD give or take.AMG747 wrote:Thanks very much for your responses Much appreciated.

I can arrange it for much cheaper.
1 CBM or 1000 kgs max weight Australia to Cambodia AUD 500.00 (includes pick up and trucking from Metro area to my warehouse) in either SYD/MEL/BRIS.
Customs Clearance and delivery within Phnom Penh USD 450.00 (no more to pay guaranteed).
If you end up sending more that the 1 CBM the rate would change as you know.
Send me your details and i will make it happen.

Sorry James, keep smoking your bong! What you are arranging is for a commercial entry. Personal items are not as hard to get in - I speak from experience, and the ministry signings are not that hard, just walking from one department to another and waiting!James Bong wrote:That AUD 600 will get you to the port in Cambodia. then you will be slugged with 500 USD for customs clearance and import permit. 200 for port charges and delivery. Thanks again guys for all your feedback. It's surprising how the cost of stuff accumulates when you come to buy it all. I've probably got at least $2,000 worth (probably more) of decent quality crockery, cutlery, small electrical items, nick-nacks, etc (nothing sentimental if the ship went down!) that would fit into onto a 1 square metre palate to ship over.
If I was to sell all this stuff here in Oz at a garage sale I'd get peanuts for it. Then when I came to re-buy similar stuff in PP I’d still have to fork out for it, plus the quality probably wouldn’t be as good.
Singapore airlines allows 20kgs check-in luggage (economy), so I’ll bring over key items in the luggage.
It might all work out to be ‘swings & roundabouts’ in the end. I just hate the thought of ‘giving’ my decent stuff away at this end before I leave . Cheers again

In 2007 I Had 23 packages with total weight of 400kgs or 3 cubic Metres shipped from Adelaide to Cambodia for total cost of APPROX usd $1000 (aud/USD WAS ONLY ABOUT 0.70 THEN)
Paid in Australia a Total OF A$867.35
extras on it are ctns 7 @ $5 =35.00 15ctns @3.50 =$52.50 Bubble wrap shelves $20.00 = $107.50 G.S.T.$10.75=$118.25 Plus the removal $749.10
It took 7 weeks from dAtae ship left til delivery at our house in PP
In Cambodia Costs were
- sihanoukville port local costs as advised for consignees account usd 127
-Customs clearance: usd180
-Non insurance: usd30
-Service charge: usd20
-Cam control 0.10% of invoice value: usd10
-Warehouse charge: usd2.78
So the total amounts is usd 369.78
This was using following as Customs clearance as they were local agent listed in bill of lading

Sorry?... for what you being a dickhead and giving false and misleading information to genuine posters? Sounds like you have been smoking too much shit man.
I am a freight forwarder and import export trader based here for over 6 years and can certainly say i have more experience in shipping matters of each and every kind... commercial or personal effects the process is still the same! Only Khmer nationals can import personal effects free of duties..
You can check all you want...
but hey no skin off my teeth..... we do what we do and are the best at what we do.
I've seen many a joker like you come and go over the years and say they can do this and that.... bullshit.
One thing ive learned in this game...Dont make false and misleading statements to people it always comes back to bite you.
I dare you to get a ruling from a Customs officer (anyone at Customs will do) that they will let personal effects of a a foreigner into the country Free of charge and not require Customs Clearance formality or an import permit or evaluation...
Wanker.. come on Chubacca..... put your money where your mouth is...

Respect James! My quip abouot smoking bongs was just a play on words! I'm not picking a fight with you, you're in the industry, and know more about the ports than I do! I'm only speaking from my experience through the AIR cargo about 8 years ago (did you read my post??). My information was not misleading, it still applies and can be done (I have a friend who did the same a couple of years ago) - I never paid any duty - I went personally to each ministry office, found the staff in each office to be helpful (if not a little slow), no under table money at all. If I can find my receipts, then happy to show you, but unlikely to go through archives to please you - especially if you want to act like an obnoxious git. I will try for the OP though. I was told by all, including ones like you (a foreigner), that it could not be done blah blah blah, but I had a local contact in Thai air, who told me what to do, and it worked no issue, just alot of running around.James Bong wrote: Sorry?... for what you being a dickhead and giving false and misleading information to genuine posters?
